Diverticulosis and diarrhea

Posted by corday7578 @corday7578, Jun 2 3:16pm

My last 2 colonoscopies showed diverticulosis, never had a problem until now. Started with left lower abdominal pain. Pain is gone but now have normal, loose, yellow diarrhea. Trying liquid & the BRAT diet. Going on for 2 weeks. Anyone have tips to resolve this? It showed on a CT scan 5/16. I sent a message to my gastroenterologist but haven’t heard back yet.

My family Dr. said if I had a flare up or frequent loose BMs I could take a Anti Diarrhea med prior to flying. My problem is that I never know when I am going to have a flare up or a trigger that my bowels are constantly wanting to move like every hour. Not eating is a good solution but If i dont eat at least a cracker or some toast I might get airsick. Wondering if Dramamine and Loperamide can be taken together? Ill have to check that. I take benefiber in my food or drink daily using one or 2 tsp depending. I find that eating spicy or foods that I dont normally eat may cause issues. If I stick to things that dont bother me Im usually ok. But stress seems to trigger issues sometimes and I sometimes get diarrhea when Im stressed. Thanks for the input and I sure hope and pray I dont have to wear depends yet. Im a 55 yr old female and that would be so embarrasing for me. But honestly stressing about getting to a bathroom while traveling is definitely a bit worry. Sorry it took you 30 years of dealing with this:( Most people think with diverticulitis issues people are constipated. Its quite the opposite for me. Im not overweight, I am fairly physically active and dont smoke or eat really unhealthy foods. I think genetics is a huge factor as my mom had 2/3 of her colon removed and hardly ever leaves her house:( Hoping this isnt my future. Hearing that you fly so much with this condition give me some hope. I will be flying approximately 3 or 4 hrs. connecting flight then another 3 hrs. I probably will not eat much the entire day and drink only water.

Hi Countrymom,
I have found that the best temperature for drinking water is "tepid" which is somewhere between tap-water cold and warm and also known as lukewarm. No ice water! Ice water can shock the GI tract and send bad vibes all the way to the colon (not good!) as we know.
I am an 85 year old lady with microscopic colitis, usually well controlled with Budesonide 3 mg a day. I lead weekly kayak trips which I love, but a kayak is no place for diarrhea!
My mother had diverticulosis. She ate everything, drank wine and occasional cocktail, and lived to be 92 - so there is hope! She also was sharp as a tack, lived alone, hosted play-reading parties etc. I wish you the best.
Good luck ,
Margot

Im a 55 yr old female. Have been diagnosed with diverticulosis in 2024. Had 2 pretty serious acute diverticulitis infections and another unconfirmed case my family dr diagnosed as focal colitis. Saw a GI dr in April of this year. He looked at my records/CT scans and said there was not much he could do for me at this point. Im currently dealing with irregular bouts of diarrhea or loose bowel movements. By that I mean explosive or running to the bathroom upon the urge to go. Sometimes I feel the urge to go and its a false alarm. Im taking benefiber every day and trying to eat foods with fiber but avoiding beans, gassy foods, raw veggies, corn on the cob, etc. I will be flying in October and am terrified the urge will hit on a plane. Will my bowel movements ever be normal or regular again with diverticulosis? Thanks for listening. My spouse is tired of hearing about my BMs. Colon issues are hereditary and my mom suffers from this issue as well.

I have suffered with IBS-D for over forty years. Flying is not a friend to people like me. I always sit on the aisle and my husband sits on an isle seat across from me. Also being in a car and having to go isn't especially fun either. In fact I have an app on my phone called We Can't Wait. I have used it more then I would have liked. It finds you and directs you to all the nearest bathrooms. Try the FodMap diet because if it is IBS there is nothing much you can do except watch your diet. I find taking something like Benefiber is one of the worse things I can take. My husband takes it for constipation. I have also been gluten free and mostly dairy free for over fourteen years and that has helped.

I’ve had my 1st flare of diverticulosis in May, still dealing with bouts of diarrhea. Tried the liquid diet & low fiber. I have constant left lower abdominal pain which is stressing me out! My stool sample just came back negative & scheduled for a colonoscopy end of August. Does the abdominal pain ever go away?

I was first diagnosed with acute diverticulitis in April of 2024. I wasnt told I had the pockets or pouches until Dec 2024 when they looked at my CT Scan. I even had a colonoscopy in June of 2024 and the Dr said I had no pouches at all. So then I got them sometime after that? This disease is so hard to find answers about. I had to take antibiotics for my infections and I followed a bland diet after my dr said I could eat certain foods. The first case I had I was told to do a liquid diet for a couple days and that was AFTER I had eaten solids. I didnt even know because the ER dr neglected to tell me. :/ The abdominal pain does go away yes, it did for me after taking a course of antibiotics after each diagnosis & CT confirmed I had an infection of my colon. I sometimes get random sharp pains and Ill use a heating pad and just monitor my symptoms and my food for a few hours to see if it goes away. Best of luck to you @corday7587.

My Dr never diagnosed me with IBS or Chrohns. He didnt seem to think my divertulitis was anything to worry with. He asked me if I had blood in my stools. He did a physical exam, asked me a bunch of questions and said basically just eat whatever I want and if something upsets my colon and give me pain /diarrhea then dont eat that food. Traveling when your bowels are unpredictable is no fun. Ive had long car trips before where I didnt want to eat much because of the stopping abruptly to find a bathroom. I use benefiber because my Dr recommended it. I usually only take 1 tsp a day. I am still working on trying to find the right amount of fiber for my body to handle. I have googled the FodMap diet and many others and I guess its whatever works for each person. Thanks and good luck to you @gussie.

Thank you so much for your response. I had no idea how difficult this is. I’m just hoping this pain lets up after doing another liquid diet.

I have suffered for many years with loose bowels and explosive bowels. I finally found a doctor that was able to help me. He prescribed 2 medications that have worked like a miracle. One is Diphenoxylate/Atropine and the second medication is Colestipol. It took a few months to really get it under control. Both medications are expensive even with Medicare Anthym Blue Cross. I have gotten to the point that I know how much I need to take to work 99% of the time. I'm so thankful for these two medications. There are breakthroughs maybe one or two days a month. That I can handle compared to multiple times every day.
