Diverticulosis

My last 2 colonoscopies showed diverticulosis, never had a problem until now. Started with left lower abdominal pain. Pain is gone but now have normal, loose, yellow diarrhea. Trying liquid & the BRAT diet. Going on for 2 weeks. Anyone have tips to resolve this? It showed on a CT scan 5/16. I sent a message to my gastroenterologist but haven’t heard back yet.

Yes, make sure you talk to your GI Dr, Is that who performed the colonoscopy?
Once Diverticulosis becomes Diverticulitis is when the lower left pain in the sigmoid colon happens. It means "something" is stuck in the pocket and becomes infected.
This is when you should go only on "liquid diet" to hopefully flush it out. If you have a fever, you should get a blood test to check your white blood count because you may need antibiotics.
If you keep having these episodes your GI Dr. should recommend a colon Dr.

Did you have any side affects from the surgery for the diverticulitis? I've heard that the surgery usually causes the rest of the intestinal tract to be weaker.

I am as regular as I was as a twenty year old! The surgery was not telescopic, I had to be cut in my belly area. Stitches and 4months of healing and all is well. No complications, but it must be noted that a fiber rich diet is needed! Plus No fast food, maybe twice a year! Cook your own food and no greasy foods!

No This was very traumatic for me to go thru.

Hi, @january10. I'm sorry to hear this has all been very traumatic. I can only imagine with your colon opening up and exploding, and you almost dying.

One of my aunts did die from that very thing, so I appreciate the seriousness. A part of her colon opened up during a surgery, causing toxins to spread all over. She was 44. The context for my aunt, though, was that she had been anorexic, which had severely weakened many parts of her body.

Sounds like you had open surgery and a longish recovery. But, it's great to hear that you have no more diverticulitis and you are as regular as a 20-year-old.

I recognize you really had no choice about having this operation. I'm curious, though, if at this point you are glad you had the diverticulitis surgery? Would you suggest it to others?

I would say no surgery, unless your having sometime of complications with your bowels! You could possibly live the rest of your natural life with divercultist and have a great life. But be very mindful YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT! LOTS OF FIBER.AND LOTS OF WATER!
