Dining out after whipple

Posted by crickard70 @crickard70, Jun 30, 2023

I am still having horrible issues with eating, went to a nice restaurant with a friend and had salmon and baked potato, grilled, and horrible stomach ache. Any suggestions for eating out? Can anyone suggest a guide to menu choices or cookbook for after the whipple procedure? Thank you, cannot gain weigh and weak.

Hi @crickard70, I'm sorry to hear you are still having horrible issues with eating following the whipple procedure.
While you wait for members who have experience with the whipple procedure to respond, you might find the following information which also has a section on meals and recipes helpful.

Thank you for the information. I had the procedure 2 years ago and 5 weeks ago had an infected pancreas and a mini Whipple. It was horrible, almost didn’t make it thank you again very helpful

I had the whipple 8 months ago and have been working on w job at I can and can’t eat. I’ve discovered that you can’t drink while you eat any meals really unless you take small sips. I would stay away from alcohol to avoid issues. I also eat smaller meals. So only eat half the portion they give you take home the rest. I can’t eat any broccoli or beans causes lots of gas and bloating. Mainly it’s all about eating small meals every few hours. So if I’m going out to eat I would eat a small snack before I go so I am not too hungry. I usually order salmon or steak and mashed potatoes. Carrots work for me Then only slowly eat chewing each bite really well, half the portion and if you have to drink only drink a couple sips every 10 or so
minutes. Take home the rest of the meal to eat later or the next day. I also am not gaining any weight. I lost around 19 pounds and am still
down around 18-19 pounds. I am starting to lift weights more often I am always walking at least a mile to mile and half every day. I do think drinking protein drinks between meals helps. I just need to do more of that.
Good luck!

I had pancreatic exocrine insufficiency and took months to work on the Creon dose. I lost from 145 to my lowest at 107. I worked with my wonderful hepatobiliary dietician at MSKCC and felt much better, able to go out of my home more and fewer quick trips to the bathroom. At 36,000 Creon, two before meals, my weight was starting to turn around. Had my Whipples on the 21st June and do notice I am not able to eat as much at one time. I can't stand to eat 6 meals a day but I am trying to have a high protein shake (30 grams protein) and a carbohydrate of some type and a tablespoon of a nut butter. The dietician suggested the nut butters. I ordered almond, walnut, and macadamia nut on line. Peanut butter and almond butter have done well.

I seldom eat away from home. If I do, and I am at a picnic type of situation, I can bring food which I know agrees with me. For sure I have made some mistakes, like eating an egg roll which caused distress for 24 hours. Same with a piece of cheese cake. Steamed beef from the Chinese restaurant and steamed dumplings or gyoza have been good. I was fixing salmon at home with just a touch of olive oil, salt and pepper, and some breadcrumbs. Grilled salmon from the Whipple's menus at MSKCC (patient's order from a menu) caused some misery. Butter definitely not good! My non stick pan doesn't require any cooking spray or oil but I added some coconut oil just for some additional calories without having more difficulty.

My intestinal symptoms are in many ways the most problematic and limit activities away from home even when I am otherwise well. Certainly a problem with good quality of life.
