Any diet restrictions with radiation? What were your side effects?

Posted by vjlvpjalways @vjlvpjalways, Nov 20, 2022

Starting 40 treatments mapping appointment next Monday.. just curious what diet restrictions and other requirements are typical?
Currently on 2nd month ADT some mild fatigue and hot flashes going strong, what are some typical side effects with the extended radiation?
thank you 🙏

@docopp

The eternal radiation treatment was tough on me. I am 50. made me extremely exhausted and a very upset bowel. I had to stay away from greasy foods, dairy, and most carbonated beverages. I found a simple tuna fish sandwich to actually be the best for not "going right through me". This really messes up the colon and bowel movements.

docoop, radiation was also tough on me. I got diarrhea very early, so early that the radiation technologist thought it was caused by something I ate but it was not. I'd be reluctant to receive radiation for prostate cancer again.

Dale1k: Spaceoar gives you an extra 1/2 inch of space between the rectum and the prostate. As I understand it, even with the MRIdian, the general radiation policy is still to radiate as much of the prostate as possible so the extra 1/2 inch made sense to me. I was told it was because of possible micro cells. Even with the MRIdian, some RO’s use the Fiducials as well since it still helps but some do not. Sometimes you even have to ask for the Spaceoar.

Hi, did you use SpaceOar Gel during treatments? Trying to get as much info as I can, my husband starts IMRT next month. Thanks

I had a failed placement of the SpaceOar gel. Now waiting until gel dissipates before I start radiation treatment without the SpaceOar Gel.

If you go to the Spaceoar web site you will find that they actually have two levels of expertise which seemed a little off to me. They give you the names of people who have been certified. In my case, I was lucky enough to have a spaceoar technician in the operating room with me when I had it inserted. I was told not to do certain exercises for a little while to make sure that the gel and or the markers did not shift. I go in this week for the mapping so maybe they’ll give me some more information then but I have not had any side effects from it yet.

I am 74 years of age and diagnosed with prostate that has spread to the lymph nodes.
I had a psa of 63 and a Gleason score of 8.
I just finished 20 rounds of radiation and had very little diarrhea problems but I took Imodium after each bout. I also drank straight Cranberry Juice every day, tastes gross but I guess it worked, I also took 2 Advil daily to help keep infection at bay.
I only had very little soreness at the rectum and no burning from the radiation on my body.
I still have slight burning, more like tight pressure when urinating but getting better.
I finished radiation 10 days ago and still have to get up during the night too often but that’s to be expected for a while.

I am on the Keto diet. Sugar is just like Testosterone it also feeds cancer, so this will be my way of eating probably the rest of my life.

I have read this and I do believe it true. When mentioned to any of my medical team they state this is not proven true. Most will agree sugar is not good for any diet but all state it is not proven to feed prostate cancer.. have you found/read any studies with findings that support this.. I really would like to read them..

Giving sugar to cancer cells does not make them grow faster and depriving cancer cells of sugar does not make them grow more slowly. However, sugar may be indirectly involved in the development of cancer. How it happens Much research shows that it is sugar’s relationship to overweight and obesity that may influence cancer cell growth the most.

web265: Today I had my first mapping with the MRIdian. They did a quick CT scan first and then digitally fused it with the MRIdian machines built in MRI. I was in the MRIdian for about a half hour. They gave me a headset for music but also put some special glasses on me so that I could see a specially positioned screen with images of the Ocean which really made me feel as if I was not in a tube. Also, my RO told me today that a new randomized study's final results was released regarding the MRIdian and toxicity that showed that the requirement, at least at Orlando Health, for the margins for the MRIdian could now be narrowed from 3 cm to 2 cm.
