Did I make the right decisions for Osteoporosis & Bone Health?
Today was the scheduled video conference with my endocrinologist after two years of commitment to Alendronate. The bells are finally ringing.
Four years ago, after a recommended need for help with my aging bones, I chose Tymlos, which is one of the bone development medications. It worked well for me without any side effects. Then came the day when I was told it was time to begin a journey with Prolia. Unfortunately, I had severe and painful side effects right away and was drawing a blank when it came to understanding what decision would be my best choice.
All of a sudden I thought that it just might be possible for me to have a medical professional right at the Mayo Clinic. With my PCP's support, I was accepted by Dr. Wermers. He started by curtailing the Prolia and initiating Alendronate. After reviewing the Dexa scan of my hip and spine, he made my dosage one 70 mg pill on Monday mornings with a full glass of water on an empty stomach while I relaxed in bed for one hour before breakfast.
He also told me that scores from the wrist area were not as reliable as hip scores when it was time to make clinical judgments due to body location and different bone composition. And today, my hip showed a statistically significant density score gain of 5.3%.
And now.... I will continue for two more years and include some additional recommendations for appropriate exercises.
I will also begin monitoring my calcium intake. My target is 1200 grams daily. (1 cup of yogurt is 300 grams.) Dr. Wermers will send me a list of calcium sources to help me
reach my daily challenge.
Having a medical professional assisting me with my osteoporosis journey ensures that my bone health will be the best it can be.

Hi meri8181, I looked into NativePath as well, but went with OsteoNaturals (Dr. McCormick's brand) instead. It's also Fortibone but a lot cheaper. It's a three month supply at 5mg a day for $59.75. If you're interested here's the link: https://www.osteonaturals.com/product-page/copy-of-osteo-collagen-pep-unflavored-450-grams
Also, this study re blueberry powder and its effects on postmenopausal women: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10447493/
AlgaeCal has Fortibone collagen as well but sold out, unfortunately:

The study on Fortibone did not compare its effects against those of other collagen peptides but against a placebo. Marketing ploy? Possibly any collagen peptide would have the same results.
Good evening @esb13, I am now at home and following some definitive restrictions to give my body a chance to "bounce" back from some scary symptoms. I do want to respond to folks who replied to my incident.
So, yes, I completed two years on Tymlos. My endocrinologist then chose Prolia as the only follow-up and "lock-in" option. My body rejected Prolia after a couple of months, and I was fighting to avoid pain and other rejection behaviors.
I checked in immediately with my PCP and asked for a consultation at Mayo with Dr. Wermers.
.......and the rest is history. That relationship still exists and is helpful.
Thanks for caring.
Chris
Can you tell me how to get a virtual appointment with doctor Wermers? Do you have to meet certain criteria? Thank you!
Can you share why doc didn’t start out with biophosphates like Fosamax? I’m 58 yrs and AI for breast cancer put me deep into osteoporosis-endocrinologist ordered Fosamax (your taking now) or Reclast infusions which scared me! I’m taking Fosamax -hoping it helps but not without side effects! Xo
Good morning @semurrey. Thanks for your response. Let me see what I can do to help you,
First- ------As I recall, I started with Boniva, which is a biphosphate. My life partner and I were spending a month at Hope Lodge for his prostate cancer treatment. I let my PCP know that things were not even or helpful. She sent me to an endocrinologist Fosamax without any side effects.
Good evening, @koleke. Are you already a patient of the Mayo Clinic? If not you can complete an appointment request by following the directions on the right-hand side of this screen. That was how I chose to make my first request. Dr. Wermers requested the virtual appointment this year. I didn't ask him why. It may have been because it would save me a trip to Rochester, and I could get the tests done and have the results sent to him. I did use that appointment request format for my first Mayo visit. You just complete the request and email it as directed. Within 3 days you will receive a follow-up call to discuss your preferences and learn what might be available.
Another Connect member was in Rochester and just walked into the section for endocrinologists and found it possible to request an appointment.
Good luck to you. Dr. Wermers is a very pleasant gentleman.

Good evening, @semurrey. Nice to meet you! Let me see if I understand your question. I don't know why I was given Boniva. I knew nothing about Osteoporosis and had never heard anything about it from my Mother or my Aunts. I had just moved to Minnesota and found a primary care physician that I liked. She told me it was time to begin to protect my bones.
Unfortunately, my body reacted negatively, so she referred me to an endocrinologist who was the one who recommended Tymlos. I have not had any problems with Tymlos or Alendronate (Fosamax?).
You mentioned that you are experiencing side effects with Fosamax. Have you asked for some help from your medical professional?
May you be safe and protected from harm.
