Did anyone try Scoping or Arthroscopy for arthritic knees?

Posted by msdds1 @msddsq, Dec 31, 2023

I have arthritic knees but still active ( 68 yo). The right knee is worse due to a cycling injury. I am really hesitant to do TKR. Has anyone had Arthroscopy and if so how did it go? The doctor is willing to do it. I think most of these doctors like to do TKR as it is more lucrative. Your comments and insight are greatly appreciated.

Well for what it's worth - I had both knees replaced in 2022 and couldn't be happier with the outcome. I'm now a former marathon runner. And the need for the TKRs wasn't caused by too much running but too much arthritis, which chewed up the menisci and articular cartilage in my knee. I was bone on bone, it affected my walking, and it caused swelling and pain. I'm glad I had them replaced.

I've also been very athletic most of my life. I had to stop running after an arthroscopic procedure to clean up arthritis. My meniscus was so damaged it had to be removed.

For a while I did hot yoga and really liked it (hot yoga is not for everyone). Since I had the TKRs, I get cardio workouts on an indoor rowing machine and spin classes. Other than slight overuse soreness in one knee, all is great.

Sounds like you did some cycling. Cycling is an outstanding exercise after TKR, same with rowing. No impact sports, however - so no running, court sports, rope jumping, et al.

I wish you the best. Get in good shape before the TKR if you do it, and hit the post op PT and rehab immediately and often!

All the best!
