Diagnosed with PMR shortly after starting statin drug.

Anyone else think a statin drug triggered your PMR?

I was diagnosed with pmr about 10 years ago. When through it for 6 to 7 years, finally went into remission. Been fine for three years now . Was also started on staten drugs , three weeks in and have developed major inflammation everywhere just like PMR . Assuming it is but have not seen a doctor yet.

After being off statin drugs for 12 years, my PCP talked me into trying Eztimibe. One day later I had a PMR flare.

Welcome @pmragain, I enjoyed a six year remission after my first time with PMR. The first time I had PMR it took me three and a half years to taper off of prednisone. The second time around I made some lifestyle changes with my diet and exercise and was able to taper off in one and a half years. I’ve been in remission for the second time the past six years and hoping it doesn’t come back. Hopefully it’s not PMR and you recover quickly.

Have you made an appointment yet?

I did contact my doctor and he told me to stop the statins and see if symptoms go away in 2or 3 weeks. It’s been 3wks and no change so will be contacting doctor soon.

I am on statins now but had similar issues with first statin. Switched to Crestor )generic) and have been fine since. My PMR began a yr after starting Crestor but after 3 months I have tapered from 20mg to 4mg successfully with no issues nor discomfort. I’m still taking 20 mg Crestor.

I was started on Toprol which is a beta blocker years ago. After three weeks both my shoulders were so painful I couldn't put my clothes on. I tapered myself off, visited the cardiologist who said he thought it was PMR and referred me to a rheumatologist. I spent months on Prednisone before the pain went away. I don’t know if it was PMR or the Toprol precipitated a severe episode of tendinitis. There has been some research on the risk of tendinopathy with some statins.

It's funny I never thought of this drug causing PMR problem. Just recently started rosuvastatin. WOW!

My sister was on Red Yeast Rice for a few yaers and was just diagnosed with necrotizing myositis. She started having leg pain and within a few weeks couldnt even walk up stairs. She is in infusion therapy now and seems to be getting better. I was on red yeast rice for 3 years and in Sept of 2017 developed PMR and GCA. Almost lost my vision. Went thru hell of high dosage prednisone and then Actemra. I hit "remission" in November of 2021 finally. My sister and I are being tested to see if statins are not a viable medication for our high cholesterol.

I have Ankylosing spondylitis, I am on immunotherapy for it. I also have high cholesterol but I'm hesitant to take a statin for it. I have been eating well but can't seem to lower it, it keeps going higher. My question is is it safe to take supplements like berberine and red yeast rice or curcumin while on immunotherapy?? Does anyone have experience with this situation/problem?

Yes, most definitely. Back in the fall of 2022 I was given a statin drug. Within months I had terrible pain in both my legs. The pain never stopped even after I threw the statin drug away. It took 3 months to be diagnosed with PMR. I have worked my way down from 15mg to 1 or 2 with two relapses. My doctor said I no longer have PMR but have Prednisone Withdrawal Symptoms. Needless to say, I still hurt and have fatigue. I am so over this and want it to go away. I wish you the best.
