My God, i don t know what chances do i have, they say only very few cases progress to cancer but you can never be sure, doesn t matter what you do. It is horrible. Soooo scary!!

Thank you for mention this condition. I heard about this or something like this in the 1970’s but have heard it mention again until now.
I’m going to look into it now because it seems like I’m being invited to investigate.
Hope you are okay I’ll post anything I find that may be of help to anyone who has this developing

Thanks for reminding me of it!

Hi @mimo, I am so glad you found Mayo Clinic Connect. Welcome!

I am not familiar with intestinal metaplasia and just did a little searching online to learn a bit. It is interesting that you do not have helicobacter pilory. I read that not smoking and getting enough dietary vitamin C are controllable risk factors worth taking a look at: https://www.verywellhealth.com/intestinal-metaplasia-4797929

I understand your concern with wanting to control this so it does not progress. Cancer is scarey. If you haven’t seen it already, you may want to check out MC Connect discussion addressing this concern:
- Lowering cancer risk with intestinal metaplasia https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/intestinal-metaplasia/

Are you working with a doctor? What is next now that you know what you are dealing with?

@torah How was your intestinal metaplasia diagnosed?
I was diagnosed with it in February, 2022 , found during an EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy).
I have a long history of reflux . The area where they found my metaplasia was the Pyloric Antrum. this is the area where pills that you take end up. I have mild discomfort in this area from time to time and when I take pills I make sure to take them with a lot of water and usually with a little food even though most of the pills I take don't need to be taken with food.
I also have RA and there is a higher risk of gastroesophageal reflux in people with autoimmune diseases.. I have never had H.pylori.
I had never been a heavy coffee drinker, but did like a really strong cup in the morning. I've given that up. Even though I was only a social drinker of wine or a mixed drink, I no longer drink any liquor. I don't tolerate anything very acidic, like a wine and vinegar salad dressing. I now take 20 mg of Pepcid, twice a day.
The worry that his would turn into cancer never goes away for me.
