Diagnosed 2022 with osteoporosis, now saying osteopenia

Posted by lilliegrace @lilliegrace, Mar 31 5:02am

I'm very confused at this point! I'm October 2022, the DEXA showed I had osteoporosis. My doctor wanted to start me on Prolia (?). I declined at that time and soon had additional health issues that were more pressing. Forward to 2025 and DEXA is showing I have osteopenia.

Are these normal results??

Hi, if the dexa scans were done on different machines that may alter the results, as each scanner can be calibrated differently.
Also, if the technician does not position you correctly, it can skew the results.
Just my opinion, but because of these anomalies in the scans, I don’t believe dexa is the best predictor of fracture.
On another note, the first “abnormal” dexa shouldn’t necessarily mean treatment with osteoporosis meds, especially Prolia, which is very difficult to stop, if the med is not stopped properly with a relay drug, you run the risk of rebound fractures, ask me how I know!?!
What was your doctor’s response to the varying dexa results?
Take care,

The scans were done at the same location. Unsure if it was the same machine 2 1/2 years later.

Thank you for the advice about prolia!! * I'm sorry for what you may have gone through.

I left a message questioning the results. An office staffer called me and, as usual, she got my message wrong. Therefore, the answer from my doctor was useless. (Staffer told doctor I was calling about osteoarthritis!!). Ugh. What other testing might be useful? My grandmother had osteoporosis really bad!! She broke ribs from sneezing! 🙁

I have a follow-up appointment on the 17th of April.

Hi, sounds like you were probably scanned on the same machine, could still be technician error.
If you are now osteopenic, you may have some time to start your research and do some further testing. This site will give you some great info.
Have you been checked for underlying causes of osteoporosis? Thyroid, parathyroid, absorption issues, meds that might cause bone loss like steroids or PPI’s, perimenopause and menopause can also lead to bone loss.
For now you can make sure your vitamin D level is optimal and that you are getting enough calcium, preferably from food.
There are other supplements many take for bone health such as Vitamin K2, magnesium, boron- I’m sure I’m forgetting some.
Eat a healthy diet and exercise. Weight bearing and resistance training.
I will tell you that for the majority of people a healthy diet, supplements, and exercise will not be enough to grow bone, but this is important not only for bone health but your overall health as well.
Depending on your age and other health issues, HRT (hormone replacement therapy), may also be an option.
The most important thing you can do right now is RESEARCH.
I have yet to find a doctor that knows enough about this condition and the treatments.
You will find that you have to advocate for yourself.
Lots of people to support you here.
Good luck.

If it's available near you and you don't mind paying, I'd consider getting an Echolight scan. If both tests say osteopenia, that's a good sign.

I will definitely look into that. Thank you!

Please tell me about your experience with rebound.
How many injections has you had?
I have recently stopped Prolia after 4 injections and are very worried about rebound.
Apparently in America there is a Class Action in regards to Spontaneous Longbone Fractures. Dr Peter Glidden did not mention the drug but we can guess which drug it was. Can you find out about this class action. We need it in Australia! Good luck and take care.

That’s ok victor5211, I will tell you my experience anyway, hoping it helps in some way
I had 3 injections of Prolia, was relayed to Fosamax, which made me very sick, I was only able to take it 8 months, 18 months later I suffered 6 pelvic fractures. My doctor said they were rebound fractures from the Prolia. It’s been a long journey since then.
Hopefully you are on a relay drug to protect you from these insidious fractures.
