Depression
How does everyone deal with the emotional trauma from this?
I have an appointment at Semmes-Murphy on July 31st. I hope he’ll do all the testing to determine why I have this.
I am diabetic, BUT it is well-controlled & has since right after diagnosed. The neuropathy started after it was controlled. I think my doctors just blow me off because they see ‘diabetic’ & automatically assume it’s that.
Since summer hit here, it has steadily gotten worse. Not sure if it’s related to humidity & pressure or what but wow!!! I’m having the hot flashes in random spots on legs & arms. Sometimes I take Aleve & get some relief, so I think there’s some inflammation or whatever.
I have had 4 MRI’s & other than some stenosis in C5-C7, which they say isn’t causing this, nothing shows up.
I just want to be taken seriously.
I’m a single woman with no children. I worry about being handicapped
See. I’m losing it. Ha
What questions should I ask the neurologist?? Tests to request?
Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance for any help.

Neuropathy is many times difficult to diagnose and with out an accurate diagnosis hard to treat. Many doctors handle that situation so poorly that the patient suffers emotionally. In that situation I believe it is best to tell the truth of how they made you feel (never forget you are just as important as the doctor). If that doesn't work try someone else. Wish I could be more helpful.
Diabetics get neuropathy whether it’s controlled or not. Over 1/2 the patients on this website is diabetic. Mine is autoimmune. I fi r ast got it in 2002 when I had Mrsa bacterial spinal meningitis. Then I got lupus, Hashimotos (autoimmune hypothyroidism,), Sjogrens and mixed connective tissue disease. My Ana, CRP, ESR and complement C3 and C4 elevated. Medications can cause neuropathy like statins, antibiotics and so forth, it can be idiopathic (no known cause).

It sounds like you need to see a neurologist for small fiber neuropathy skin punch biopsy and bloodwork for neuropathy. In addition to diabetes , you could have some vitamin deficiencies or toxicities like B6 or B12. These deficiencies or toxicities can cause neuropathy. You also want to make sure not to drink alcohol or smoke/vape due to toxin exposure which causes neuropathy.
Warm weather definitely aggravates neuropathy pain in feet. You can try ice packs covered in a towel, cool foot soaks with epsom salt, compression socks, lidocaine and/or capsaicin cream (nerve pain), Voltaren cream (inflammation), alpha Lipoic acid, magnesium and Acetyl l carnitine supplements, and ask the neurologist about prescribing Cymbalta (duloxetine) for nerve pain and depression from chronic pain.
@aunttonipage
P.S. You may want to also work with a nutritionist/dietitian if you have any deficiencies or toxicities to adjust your diet/supplements to ensure you continue to manage/control your diabetes well.
Both my endocrinologist & PCP say mine shouldn’t be diabetic cause typically doesn’t progress if sugar is controlled. I guess we will see. I do take a statin. But I have for years.
@aunttonipage , I hope you have a good experience with your upcoming appointment. I temper my expectations after multiple attempts to get diagnosis for my issues. I’ve had type 1 diabetes for many years. No eye or kidney damage, but I’m not sure about neuropathy. My neurologists (2) say its not neuropathy….so….idk. What tests have you had? Any vitamin deficiencies or injuries? Emg tests?
I still haven’t had spine tests. Thank goodness I don’t have pain.
My guess about doctors is that neuropathy is pretty much treated the same way regardless of its cause. (Though I realize some spine procedures are said to offer promise if corrected.) And that’s with medication.
I take a statin too and am about ready to do a trial pause….trouble is my GP says stopping a statin is risky immediately afterwards. So, idk. It’ll be interesting to see what you find out. What do your endo and PCP say? My PCP says he doesn’t believe my small dose statin is the culprit.
I’ve had an EMG - just showed neuropathy
No vitamin deficiencies.
I do have hypothyroidism, but those numbers are fine.
B12 is fine.
All bloodwork is perfectly normal.
Four MRI’s. Nothing pressing on a nerve.
Wow…..are you type 1 or 2 and how long with diabetes? I realize you have good numbers.
I was officially diagnosed in Nov. 2023. Type 2
Hello,
I’m really sorry about your current situation.
I personally have large fiber peripheral neuropathy which was recently diagnosed and confirmed after the second EMG/nerve conduction test. I am not diabetic, my condition is idiopathic which means causes unknown and it is a progressive condition with treatments to slow down but no current cure. I am on my second neurologist and I advise you to really try to find a good one depending on your area. I hope you find a good neurologist who will listen to you.
Keep up your spirits and take it day by day. You are your own greatest champion and are very worthwhile.
Best wishes to you and take care,
gus
