I will be 75 next month lately I have been having a deep rough sounding cough during the night it doesn't disturb me it happens maybe once or possibly twice at night and all I have to do is clear my throat but I've never had this sound before coming from way low

sandwalk, Just some thoughts:

1) Have you been checked for sleep apnea?
2) Do you breathe through with your mouth open when you sleep?
3) Did you recently have COVID? This can cause excess mucous in some.
4) Do you have GERD (Acid Reflux)? This can cause coughing.
5) Do you have allergies or sinus issues? It's that time of year with dryness and it can cause coughing. You may want to try a cool mist humidifer.

I would see my primary or an ENT doctor for a consultation.

I pray you find answers. Blessings to you.....

Thanks for the quick reply yes it's phlegm and I have had covid and also I've always had allergies and yes you're right I do it's very dry and I have been sleeping all winter with the humidifier so I guess if I didn't have that it would be worse

Covidstinks2023 mentioned GERD as a possible cause. While you are searching with doctors you can check out the GERD possibility on your own. Go to a low acid, whole food diet for a month and see if you have improvements. Plus sleep with your head elevated. Before I figured out the acid reflux connection I used to go to sleep with a cough drop snug in the back of my throat. Usually got me through the night, and if it didn't, I popped another one in. Dr. Jamie Koufman has good, free info on reflux you can try if you want to see if that is your issue. Good luck in your exploration!
