What, specifically are you concerned about? It’s a part of the treatment to keep you well- from what i understand. Anything that’s unknown is usually scary to the majority of us. Maybe speak directly with your doctor about it, or others that have gone through it?

There is a test you can take to see what your recurrence rate would be to find out if radiation is actually necessary. Some people just take the meds for 5-10 yrs. It depends on what your recurrence percentage is as what your next steps are. Good luck.

Did you put DCIS up in the subject line? Maybe someone else has posted on this subject.

I would suggest talking directly to the radiation oncologist. The one I consulted was very helpful for a rare neuroendocrine tumor in my breast. Your situation is quite different, but you can ask how you will benefit, and get some clear statistics. Then share your concerns, and weigh the information to make a decision. Hope you can get the information you need.

I highly recommend reading The Smart Woman’s Guide to Breast Cancer by Dr. Jenn Simons. This book offers a comprehensive look at a functional medicine approach to understanding, treating, and overcoming breast cancer, including DCIS. It explores vital topics such as the benefits of a whole food, plant-based diet, the impact of genetics, how to interpret your diagnosis, and an overview of conventional treatments along with their potential side effects. Dr. Jenn addresses root causes like chronic inflammation and provides practical guidance on creating a healing environment through lifestyle modifications, diet, and toxin avoidance. She has a lot of credentials, including being a breast cancer surgeon for two decades and now oncologist.

I decided to do radiation because of the benefits. Speak with your doctor because they should be able to explain if radiation is the gold standard to decrease your chance of recurring.
Depending on the size of your tumor, invasive versus none invasive. not having radiation may be a viable option

I had a consultation with Dr Jenn’s nurse pa. Last year. Unfortunately Dr. Jenn isn’t taking patients but I did have a good convo. Also looked into Dr. leigh Erin Connealy in California. Read her book talked with a nurse there. The initial cost was $10,000 up front and out of that 10,000 2500 I believe was for consulting and tests. And then whatever money was left over after the initial consult and tests, would be refunded back to you if you didn’t want treatment. But from what I understand treatment can be very costly. So I listen to both ladies and my mayo team and my El Paso team and do what I am comfortable with.
