Daughter has suicidal ideation

Posted by intriagozz @intriagozz, Aug 22 9:03am

Daughter has been suicidal (ideation) for a few years now, was baker acted in 2023, pills. She has a physiatrist/phycologist. She may be on an autistic spectrum, albeit very light. She’s taking medication that has been prescribed for years also. But nothing seems to be working well. Still having issues. I am reaching out to the Mayo Clinic to see if they may have specific tests and maybe a better understanding of what may be causing this. Anyone have any advice or what steps to be taking? I don’t feel comfortable sending her to an inpatient facility as it seems most are just there to take your money, no real info on the therapists they use, and could baker act her at will. She’s 19, but immature for her age, also seems to be part of the issue.

intrigozz,
A mom's love knows no limits. Mental health/illness is just plain scary to us all...the patient and the family. I am a 65 yr old who has had MDD for years now I have added PDD, BPD. The MDD was set off when I was 19, but couldn't take meds cuz I had recently got married and was now pregnant (with adorable twin daughters), then I got so focused on being a good mom to 2 babies, that I started learning how to cope, then how to flat out fake it.
You and your daughter are so very fortunate to have each other and that both of you know there is, possibly more than one problem. In my humble opinion, both of you knowing, is truly important.
I had to look up "baker acted", in CA it's called a 5150. I am obviously not a doctor, I am the patient. I have been 5150 x3 involuntary and 1x voluntary, all as an adult. No dr. ever knew about pills, except the first time. It was determined that I had a very strong BAD quick reaction to the Xanax a shrink put me on. That is the ONLY time being in the hospital locked ward for a week was a positive result, in 1986.(I received treatment, not like in future yrs, I was treated like a prisoner and had pills shoved down my throat to keep me quiet and safe/dead)...the patient and being a mom, again, my opinion, I would do everything possible and even more, before I would have one of my children hospitalized. A few questions I would ask myself, if I was in your position: In 2023, did she really take enough pills that would kill her? Compare her memories, your memories and dr. notes, do all the memories seem alike? If you haven't already, get a COMPLETE COPY of the hospitalization, and the COMPLETE COPY of the dr. mandating it. If possible get your daughter to give you as much detail as possible (tape recording might be easier, but having her write it down may help her). What triggered her to take the pills? How young did she start meds? What meds is she on now? All prescribed by same doctor? Does she believe that the meds help her? Do you? I suggest these med questions because I had only 2 psychiatrists in 20 years, the first one told me, I simply can't take antidepressants/anxiety, I don't respond well ever and I have responded badly to some. The second one confirmed it, when I was given Topomax for refractory migraines, I was not told that most patients on this had to be on antidepressants also. I had been on the Topomax only 3 days when SUICIDE THREAT hit like a hurricane. Even I was terrified, made worse because I was supposed to be going to the only grandchild's birth I missed, in just a month. My psychiatrist said NO to antidepressants, a plan that included my husband was put in place to titration me quickly. I willingly gave up my keys, all knives, scissors, etc, you get the idea. Do you have a husband, children, friends, etc that either already know or if told, they could be on call for urgent help or available for general support? Does your daughter attend school or has she graduated? Does she trust herself to do no deadly harm? Do you? Ask her what does she want? You get where I am coming from, as patient and mom, I have very very little trust in our doctors, of any kind these days.
I know I got long winded about this, I tend to do this when I have a very strong opinion. Again, I'm just posing ideas, that might help you form your ideas about a very complex and often treated with disrespect by doctors and friends. My heart goes out to you and your daughter.

@intriagozz Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. We are not medical professionals, but patients, family members and caregivers that share our experiences.

@shelleyw had some wise words. Are you close to a Mayo Clinic campus [in Rochester [MN], Jacksonville [FL], or Phoenix [AZ]? Here is a link to reach out to Mayo Clinic for an appointment: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

Please let us know what information you find out?

Hello, the Mayo Clinic is not accepting any new patients for their mental health departments, as per a phone call I had with them yesterday.

@intriagozz If you live near a Mayo Clinic campus, perhaps they can offer you a referral to a local source?

Another thought is to turn to NAMI [National Alliance on Mental Illness] and check for information to get your daughter, and you, some assistance. https://www.nami.org/

Or ask if your primary care doctor is willing to offer a trusted name to steer your daughter towards.
