What are Daily Sugar Guidelines for cirrhosis of the liver?
I have just been diagnosed with cirrhosis, dietary wise I have sodium and protein guidance and all the material I read online says a low sugar diet as well. I've searched and searched and I can't find any information on what a sensible cap would be, does anyone have any insight into how many grams of sugar is ideal in a day?

@mcgrawwv, welcome. I updated the title of your discussion and added it to the Digestive Health support group as well so that you can connect with other members living with cirrhosis and managing a healthy diet like @alexandern @jamesduaiswamy @germangal @kristinanicole2002 @alfonso22 @puddy68 @parrot53 and others.
I found this recent study:
- A Low Daily Intake of Simple Sugars in the Diet Is Associated with Improved Liver Function in Cirrhotic Liver Transplant Candidates https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10097197/
And this about Managing hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) and diabetes for people living with a liver condition: https://britishlivertrust.org.uk/information-and-support/living-with-a-liver-condition/diet-and-liver-disease/cirrhosis-and-diet/#high%20blood%20sugar
Like you, I didn't find an exact quantity, but less is better. A general recommended daily sugar intake is to limit added sugars to less than 10% of your total daily calories.
@mcgrawwv, are you managing cirrhosis through lifestyle? Is transplant being considered?
I have cirrhosis and liver cancer since 2021. I did 1 radiation 1 chemotherapy doing MRI every 3 months thanks God feeling ok but my last meeting with my oncologist she ask me about my diet to be honest I wasn’t doing nothing to help me I realize I need to help my self so I try to eat healthy vegetables fruits nothing processed foods no juices salt or sugar as I was told by my doctor so I am doing that I love my sweets but I had been good for my coffee I use raw honey I try to get organic food since our liver can’t process as well as when was healthy keep positive accept your illness trust GOD my mother got the same as I do now but unfortunately she passed within 3 months sending prayers and comfort your way
It just happened, so I'm overhauling all my food choices, we have not yet had the consultation for transplant, as of now my MELD is pretty low, im trying to keep it there.
