Crohn's disease and bad flare up

Posted by tia8marie @tia8marie, Feb 3 8:56pm

Does anyone have Crohnes disease and has dealt with a severe flare up? It’s been three weeks in the hospital tomorrow and just can’t wait to go home. My body is worn out.

So sorry to hear this! 3 weeks is a long time. What type of flare up are you having? I was hospitalized that long when my Crohn's created a fistula.

@catherine1290 severe ulcers in the colon. I have a fistula as well but they’re focusing on the ulcers.

@tia8marie I also was full of ulcers. When they repaired the fistula they had to give me a temporary iliostomy until the ulcers healed otherwise it would have been like trying to stitch together hamburger.

@tia8marie I was just at mayo after being in septic shock in another hospital system. It seems I have severe ulcers in colon. They did not look for that while hospitalized. I am currently on a 6 week steroid regimen while deciding on a more permanent solution. I hope outpatient is an ok place to be since now we believe this is what caused the septic shock. How are they treating it inpatient?

Hi @crisshado1, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! You must be scared and exhausted dealing with what you now know is sever ulcers in your colon. I am glad to see you are connecting with others as you work through what is next. You can do this!

You mention a concern after being at Mayo and starting six weeks of steroids with being comfortable not actually in the hospital. I do not have your condition nor a medical degree, and other members can tell you about their inpatient experiences.

As you wait for others to respond I want to set your mind at ease about being an outpatient. I can tell you as a patient at Mayo Clinic I typically get very clear instructions to take with me, including what to do/who to contact if specific things were to happen. My experience has been they are extremely concerned that I understand the instructions and that I should call with any questions. They do expect to hear from you if you need reassurance about anything.

How are you feeling? Do you have contact information to contact your care team at Mayo Clinic?

@crisshado1
No one here can give you medical advice. It would be a good idea to contact the doctor that prescribed you latest medication as soon as their office is open. In the meantime, please go to the ER if you are concerned.

Thanks, wasn’t looking for medical advice, more like how it works to get to your team.Thats the info I was not given. I am new to mayo and it seems to work differently than other medical systems.

Hello @crisshado1

I just read your conversation with @jlharsh about contacting your medical team with questions. As @jlharsh noted, it is important to get answers to your questions and address your concerns. Keep trying to contact your physician by phone or through the patient portal until you get the answers you need. I'm sure that the Mayo medical team wants to hear from you and answer your questions.

Will you post an update again?
