"Cranky gut"

Posted by ajh5285 @ajh5285, Sep 1, 2023

Background: 74 yo F diagnosed with pancreatic adenocarcinoma with lung mets last year; no certain risk factors, but as a retired doc I have my own ideas some of which I’ve mentioned in other posts here. On prescription Creon for exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and, I think, developing increasing intolerance for carbs with sucrose. A considerable amount of gas pain associated with eating carbs, not so much when sticking strictly to meat - fat meals. Unfortunately, they leave my mouth feeling like an ash tray.

My current dilemma is something that I first noted in my diet diary almost a month ago and have lovingly (NOT) described as “cranky gut.” By this I mean a sense of urgency to visit the toilet, followed by a rather watery discharge with a few small turds. It occurs after eating.

My oncologist has recommended “getting out ahead of diarrhea” by taking loperamide. Unfortunately, I tend to be slow to react, and wind up most of the time only remembering after the first “dump” and then playing catch-up.

Does anyone else here have any experience to share?
Maybe my posting this question here will serve as a trigger to remind me to take that first loperamide. When I first get up? Or before that first meal?

Forgot to mention how often when I have "cranky gut" I'm also aware of how "tight" my feet feel. Almost as if the 2 go together some how as some sort of weird allergic reaction.
