Cramping/ spasms while standing

Posted by t619 @t619, Oct 18, 2022

Hello,
Does anyone else get spasms/ severe tightness across buttocks/lower back and upper thighs when they stand for more than a few minutes?
I can feel really good and be fairly loose and comfortable, but when I try to stand to cook a meal, wash dishes, etc., I have to repeatedly stop and go sit down. If I rest for a few minutes, I can usually continue, but I have to repeat the stand/sit process to complete any standing task. If I push it too much the stiffness/pain starts radiating up my back. Arms from elbows up get tired and weighty too.
I don't usually have much morning pain/stiffness, but I do need to move around to prevent it. It is usually made much worse with activity though.

Hello @t619, Welcome to Connect. Before I was actually diagnosed with PMR and was having severe gout like pain in my right foot along with pain in other my other joints, I had to navigate our stairs on my hands and knees because I couldn't stand or walk without extreme pain. My wife drove me to an appointment with the rheumatologist who diagnosed PMR and prescribed 20 mg prednisone which made it so I could walk in just a few hours. I was amazed at how fast it went away when I started the treatment. Tapering off was another story.

I haven't experienced the same symptoms as yours for PMR but it does sound similar to what is described in this Mayo Clinic page:

" The signs and symptoms of polymyalgia rheumatica usually occur on both sides of the body and might include: Aches or pain in your shoulders. Aches or pain in your neck, upper arms, buttocks, hips or thighs."

Hi, I've been having the opposite problem: severe cramping in my legs and hands when sitting/lying down. It's bad enough to wake me up in the middle of the night. It only stops after stretching and moving for several minutes and happens throughout the day as well. I try to hydrate and keep moving as much as possible, but it doesn't seem to stop the cramps.

I also suffer with intense rolling back spasms but mine are usually focused on the upper back, shoulders, and neck. I have gotten them while standing for a few minutes but I have also gotten them while lying down or sitting. I have also noticed that I get more lower leg and toe cramps than I have ever gotten before. I think the main take away for me is that spasms have been a definite part of my PMR journey. I am going to give low carb eating a focused effort (several group members have indicated that it helps) to see if it curbs my inflammation. My inflammatory markers were improved after I started on Prednisone but both my Sed rate and CRP were elevated again at my last appointment. Praying that we can all figure out what works and get PMR in permanent remission! Blessings!
