Cracking sounds in brain PLEASE HELP

Posted by romanthegreat @romanthegreat, Dec 9, 2023

I was experiencing a few symptoms as I was laying down on my bed yesterday, falling asleep. The symptoms are still present today:

- Cracking/Clicking sounds AND sensations from the inner center of the brain/skull, it seems.

- As if there is something in there moving/'digging'? Could it be a parasyte?

- Sensation comes and goes, usually lasts a few sec. when it comes.

- More pronounced when laying down I think and when there is no noise around so I can focus on it (maybe thats why I heard it the first time as I was about to sleep, because it was so quiet in my room).

- Wanted to mention this cause it may be connected to the brain/skull stuff -> Last weeks I was feeling some weird sensations in my right ear, as if it was somewhat a little clogged or something, can't really explain it. The day of the incident I didn't really have this symptom with the ear though, only the clicking coming from the CENTER of the inside of the skull.

- Blood pressure and everything is good, I feel good and there are no headaches.

I tried to be as detailed as I could. If anyone knows anything I would appreciate it a lot. How concerned should I be?

Kind of scary.
I'm just guessing that it is a muscle twitching in your ear. It sounds like the middle of the skull because of the way sound bounces off our bones. I would use a spray decongestant and pseudophedrine-- it is over the counter but you have to ask the pharmacist.
If it doesn't go away within a few hours, I'd schedule with an otolargyngologist.
But I am really just guessing, so I hope you get more answers.

@romanthegreat I can see how those noises would be really distressing. I agree with @gently. This is something to get evaluated perhaps by starting with your primary care provider. I’m guessing here too but it’s possible that you are experiencing tinnitus. Tinnitus is generated by the inner ear and a person can “hear” all kinds of noises. I personally hear a buzzing or ringing in my ears sometimes. Like you, I only those noises when it’s quiet and I’m lying in bed.

It’s great that otherwise you feel so good and your blood pressure is in the normal range.

When do you think you’ll contact our primary care physician or an ear, nose, and throat doctor?

I could be wrong but it sounds like Brain Zaps. I've been getting those all the time for a long time now. They say it comes from depression medicine and if you stop then you get these zaps. I got them stopping the meds. Then it went away and came a few years later when I wasn't on any meds like that, so I'm wondering if it could be related to my neck as that is a mess and my hearing getting whacky. So don't know but if you think it could be what I'm saying then maybe that's what it is.

Have ENT specialist check for a hair (s) in each of your ears.

I have degenerative disk disease in my neck and possibly my neck is a little out of alignment dues to a fall I had onto my left side onto a stone floor 50 yrs ago. These problems cause my neck muscles to spasm and be very tight which pulls on my scalp muscles which then squeeze my skull and cause occasional cracking sound. Sorry for the long sentence

An exhibit of the lost art of the long sentence is not cause for sorrow.
Do you ever see chiropractors?

I have the same thing in my neck. I fell down the stairs 10 steps--45 yrs ago. I have brain zapping when i am about to sleep. I have tinnitus, ear aches and vibration or body buzzing when lying on my left side.

Gently
Yes - one of the many symptoms I enjoyed during a year of Giant Cell Arteritis and its ensuing recommended treatment was a “wire brush on snare drum” with each head posture change (slow or rapid) and during mastication.
ENT suggested hair deep in ear canal making contact with ear drum as possible cause.
Upon examination no hair was present so we’ll never know.
However it is a simple noninvasive procedure which just might help the clicking.
We hope this helps!!
