Covid booster with autoimmune disease AND bronchiectasis

Posted by pacathy @pacathy, 4 days ago

I have an autoimmune skin condition that causes misery and lack of sleep, but isn't deadly. It has been flaring a few months. I responded to Xolair for a couple months, but it has lost effectiveness. My dose was just increased to bi-weekly.
I have mild bronchiectasis and have been stable for about 2 years.

If you have autoimmune disease and bronchiectasis, what is your doc's recommendation for boosters? My immunologist told me no booster until this settles because it's linked to flares, but she isn't very thorough and I doubt she remembered my bronchiectasis. I emailed her when Xolair quit working and again included a comment that I'd like to get booster due to bronchiectasis and she increased Xolair frequency, but ignored booster/bronchiectasis comment. My primary thinks Covid is a bigger risk and I should get booster soon. My pulmonologist saw me while I was responding to Xolair and we thought I could get booster soon. I'm feeling torn.

Are those of you with autoimmune issues getting your boosters? Did they cause flares to worsen?

I have Crohn's in remission on humira, and BE, & MAC being treated w Azithromycin, ethambutol & probably Arikayce (study med or else placebo).
ALL advice I have received is that keeping vaccines & boosters up to date is imperative. Just no "live" vaccines while on immunomodulatory & if you're not sure which those are, check w yr docs. I have not heard of vaccines causing flares in autoimmune conditions but i am not familiar w yr med nor w the autoimmune skin conditions so I would not have any input on that.

Thank you for your input. It's helpful.
I was surprised by her response. Both Covid and the vaccines can trigger the urticaria and I think she's just focused on that. I think I'll wait until a week or two (peak action) after tomorrow's dose and chance it.

No experience specifically with this, but I wonder if taking an antihistamine before a vaccine could be helpful?

Thanks for the idea. I did a bit of looking and while it's not advised for most, there's a report of two cases who had cutaneous reactions to the vaccine, yet needed the boosters. The docs had them premedicate with antihistamine and take one for 5 days afterwards and it decreased their reactions. I already take 4/day, but can take morning dose right before and add a type 1 at bedtime for 5 days.

I have MAC and BE. I can’t respond about your situation but as for me I’m reluctant to boost as last 2 booster I suffered severe vertigo for 6 weeks. Worried about another booster too!

The vertigo would be concerning. Did you get the Moderna or Pfizer booster? I've had more side effects (fevers mainly) after Moderna and am thinking about finding a Pfizer one.

I have a hard time with Moderna, which is what I started with, and ended up switching to Pfizer. I still get flu like symptoms for a day or two, and sore arm for same period, but for some reason not as bad as with Moderna.

All Pfizer except one was moderna. I’m pretty sure during the last vertigo episode I suffered a small stroke confirmed by an MRI sometime later. I remember waking with pins and needles in head face and lip on left side felt like it was drooping but I just got up carried on and it went away. Thus my worry of another booster. I will have to check if moderna was the last one I had!

Welcome! I'm very sorry you need to be here, but I think you'll continue to find it a supportive and helpful group.
Do you have MAC and/or bronchiectasis?
