Costochondritis

Posted by jadillow @jadillow, Apr 29, 2019

I just wanted some more info on this for my chest pain and see if this is possibly an issue. I have a pain in upper ribs, both sides of sternum. Not intolerable but annoying. During time of pain it feels those ribs are “raised”. Any insight would be great. Thanks.

I have mild discomfort around where my bra fastens. I also have a hiatal hernia. After eating noon meal it worsens and I must loosen bra. Also stomach swelling. I do have an ileostomy but not sure what is causing this discomfort. Not awful but very uncomfortable around bottom of bra and waistline.

I have similar discomfort from the bra and at my waistline. I avoid wearing bras when I’m home. I also try to use pants with elastic waistband or ties.
I have bloating all the time and will have it checked soon.
Since you have a hiatal hernia you can ask your doctor if it causes your discomfort after eating or if something else causes it.

I stopped wearing underwire bras during covid. Wish I did it sooner. Belly bloat has always been a problem for me. I rarely wear trousers or jeans except for dress. Just turned 75 and thinking comfort is so important to keep me from being cranky.

@mtnyankee -
That’s so true!!
Some years ago I wondered why this particular clothing brand used almost exclusively elastic waistbands in their clothing. Now I know , I think, that it’s aimed at older women!
I prefer to wear camisoles now.

Pain in jaw and arm recommend strongly that you see a medical doctor as this symptom can be a sign of a problem.

Does anyone suffer from Costochondritis that gets worse when they eat or drink anything? I have had every imaginable test, lost 25 lbs since September because I can't eat alot before pain starts for next 3 hrs. I even had my gallbladder removed but did not help. Very frustrated.

This sounds like me. My pain is all on my right side. Started close to 3 years ago 1 month after an illness in 7/20 (I believe it was COVID). I have since been to multiple doctors with many tests and bloodwork all to show nothing is wrong with me. Makes me feel so dumb at times like they think I am making this pain up. I have had breast surgery '92, tubal in '95, gastric sleeve in '14 and cholecystectomy in '17. So many surgeries to the area of pain. Other than surgeries, I havent had any large blows to the chest area except I wrecked on my bike as a child where the handle bars hit my ribs but not causing any severe pain that I recall. My pain all started in the RUQ. Off to the right side of the triangle under my rib cage and has gone up under my right breast to the side of my ribs to my back (like I have an arrow threw my back to under my right rib) to my right clavicle and then referred pain down my right side. Started out feeling like I had a stone under my right rib cage to now a rock at times. Its been constant gnawing, stabbing pain for almost 3 years all right sided. This pain has cause me much anxiety because I worry at "what is wrong with me" and depression cause I feel like "I have no answers". I dont get much sleep due to the pain which xasperates everything. I am turning 60 this year and WAS feeling like this is MY time to get to enjoying LIFE. More time (working only part-time from home now) I was finally able to start golfing more, bought myself my own motorcycle, use Supernatural on my Oculus for exercise and have big hobbies to start but this pain has puts a hold on everything but will not give these things up! On good days I do what I can and then greatly pay for it later. In the beginning not know what was wrong I tried a gallbladder diet, then a liver diet/cleanse to a FOODMAP diet, to anti-inflammatory diet, to vegetarian diet to lectin free diet. I've lost 40lbs but still in pain. I do have a small hiatal hernia and cyst on liver but told that neither should cause the pain I feel. Doctor finally after 2 yrs/9 mo have finally said Costochondritis/scar tissue pain! Nothing they can do except medication or pain injections. Also suggested I try 800mg of ibuprofen ever 4 hours for 4 days. I am NOT a medication person ugggh! I feel at wits end but wont give up and stop life. Anyone??

You described it like an arrow through the back lung - excellent description of my pain.
I was told I have this due to fibromyalgia. I’ve been taking curamin and this other natural pain reliever

Thank you! I will look into this. How long have you had your pain? When did it start and what do you believe started it?

It’s been fairly recent that I’ve had this pain for this long- diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2005. It helps to have an adjustable bed. Laying flat is so uncomfortable.

#1 … when i took gold lessons i had a rib go out of line which caused horrible pain.. found out it was from the awkward movement of golf swing .. so had to obv give that up
#2… i have had fibromyalgia / Chronic fatigue syndrome for many years and find it getting worse as i get older ( now 76)
#3.. i have dealt unfortunately with the bad bad pain of costrochonditis ( sp?) several times and it’s truly awful pain- only thing i found to help was 2 or 3 weeks of being on Steroid Prednisone..
Soo see if your dr can give you RX for this…
Good luck
