Continual soreness and weakness in my legs

Posted by sherry101166 @sherry101166, Jul 14 8:11am

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 12 years ago. The pain was my shoulders and neck. Since then, the pain affects my whole body. Maybe due to aging? I am 58 now. The worst problem I have now is my legs. The muscles in the back of my legs and going into my buttocks are so sore it's painful to bend over . It makes my legs feel weak. Also the front muscles of my legs will hurt so bad I need pain med. Can anyone relate and do you have a reason for this?

You need to work with your doctor. Some clinic now have a day class on how to deal with it. They teach you about exercise, diet, and proper sleeve. Exercise is important and I love tai chi. It is a slow moving exercise program and it sure helps me.
I wish you the very best

@sherry101166. Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I’m glad you came to this site. @minnesota10 mentions the importance of exercise, which I don’t think you’ll be able to manage at this time. The best thing to do is go to your PCP and get them to refer you for physical therapy. I had a lot of pain in my legs, especially when i went walking. I’ve had 2 PT sessions and I already feel better!
Do you think your doctor is controlling your fibromyalgia well enough? Are you on any pain medications for it?

Thank you @becsbuddy for responding. I take Lyrica but, I'm not so sure it helps much. I saw the rheumatologist who originally diagnosed me to make sure something else hadn't developed. He acted as if I should know it's only fibromyalgia. Honestly, my PCP is much more understanding and I guess I should ask him about the PT. I've been told pool therapy is best but, I'm afraid the kicking would only cause my legs to be more sore.

I read a book on fibromyalgia that said," 3 things to remember, exercise, exercise, exercise. Check utube for videos for exercise for seniors over 60. You can do them daily. Start slow and build up as you can.

What I was thinking is slow moving exercise exercises like tai chi. It gets you moving it gets your muscles moving along with a little weight lifting about 5 pounds. I have found tai chi very useful for me. Before I get up, I move my legs, And my back by slow, moving movements right and left up and down.. Fast workouts running don’t work well for people with fibromyalgia. That is what I was thinking. I wish you the best

Infrared heating pads work well along with the exercise to help manage the soremess and pain. I just got done treating my right knee.
