What helps with Constipation after prostate cancer surgery?

Day 4. I m used to going poop every day. First thing in the morning. Sore from surgery, can’t push. What do you do to go poop? Should I give myself an enema? What can I take? Taking stool softeners but no poop yet. Take a probiotic also.

Four weeks after my prostatectomy, I had a similar situation. I had not used opioids at home, just Tylenol, and I was drinking 65oz of fluids per day, walking at least 10 minutes every waking hour during the first 2 weeks and eating soft foods. Regular soft, rather watery BM's every morning. I thought I was in the clear so I resumed my more normal diet. But then I went out for lunch and stupidly, ordered a delicious, salty, greasy, cheese-laden Reuben sandwich. A day or so later, I got hit with what I call "baseball-in-the-butt" constipation! I had increased my water intake above the 65 ounces and taken Miralax. I was straining and was about to go to the ER. Finally, in my distress, I called my PCP's office anyway. They had an on-call RN who amazingly called me back within 10 minutes. They told me that it was OK for me to take an extra dose of Miralax, that is more often than once per day. I had just taken it one time per day. Although it wasn't easy, the extra Miralax along with all the water, brought relief.

Lesson learned: don't eat salty, greasy, cheese-laden sandwiches during recovery!

Pro-tip: During my final effort, I learned that the strongest urges to poop would come in waves while standing but when I would go sit on the toilet the urge would go away. So what I did was put on a pair of the Depends underwear, that I had bought for incontinence, and just keep walking until the urge came and then wait to sit on the toilet, without worrying about the mess. Standing helped reduce the strain and compression on the abdominal zone compared to the sitting position,

Hope everything comes out OK for you in the end :>)

My husband has been dealing with the effects of tge ADT drugs for over a year. We e finally found 'Calm' which helps better than anything else he's tried. He also takes stool softeners daily with it. You can get it in Amazon, Costco, & Walmart.

I’ve been down this road and I’m STILL on it! But I won’t digress…
Most posters have given you excellent advice- Miralax is pretty good. But you CAN’T PUSH after surgery! I did and wound up bleeding from every surgical incision (robot) plus the drain and the penis; wound up with an incisional hernia and corrective bladder surgery from it.
An enema is an excellent remedy to get you out of the impaction phase you are heading into if you don’t poop soon. After you administer it, try to hold it in as long as you can otherwise you’ll just excrete water.
Also, remember that you’ve been placed on a soft diet post op and that contributes to
Decreased stool production.
I recently purchased a ‘squatty potty’ on Amazon snd it is extremely helpful in aiding your leg/abdominal position and giving you a built in push posture that reduces straining on your part. Best!

I am almost a year scones last chemo for lymphoma B
Tumour pet scan shows complete remission
I found that I was always constipated, drug store remedies did not always help
My oncologist suggested I try a couple of dried prunes followed by large Glass of water then half hour later small bowl of oat meal Then wait half hour before having a cup of coffee
Bingo it works 90% of the time with in the next hour
Sometimes I do not need the coffee and I am finding more so lately that I returning to a normal regularity
Anyway it worked for me Oncolgist explained that the my poop was drying out and this routine was helping to lubricate things
Give it a try for a short time and see if it helps also exercise your bowel muscles

I ate some Costco prunes which did the trick. I have a few first thing in the morning, then some coffee. Seems to work

My RO said absolutely NO prunes while in radiation - they produce too much gas. I usually eat a lot of corn, beans and cruciferous veggies which keep me regular as rain but cannot eat those either - more gas!
So now I take a non-fermentable fiber supplement called Healthy Fiber - get it on Amazon. 3X per day with lots of water gives you almost 20gms of fiber. Also eat oatmeal which is allowed. Pretty much a ‘FODMAP’ diet used for those with IBS.
It’s working so far🤞🤞
