Constipation with continued stomach issues. What to do?

Posted by crazycat3us @crazycat3us, 1 day ago

After feeling sick and nauseous for 2 weeks I went to me Dr. She did an xray and my system was fully backed up. Three days of magnesium citrate. Two weeks of miralax a few times a day and stool softeners. Now I've been advised to add Metamucil. I have had soft bowel movements, but it doesn't feel enough to clear out. I'm still having stomach discomfort and passing small amounts. I can't get into a GI Dr. Until March. I'm tired of being tired and sick.

Did they do a CT scan and see a stricture somewhere in your intestines ? Or is this because your intestines are not having peristalisis ? The treatment is different for each of these. Watch for temp ,vomiting, pain all over, and confusion, dizziness and no urine. If that happens go to ER .The least painful way I get my bowels to work is prune juice. Prayers you will find a solution and feel better.

My husband has great results with adding fermented foods and a squatty potty. But his elimination issues may be quite different.

Hi @crazycat3us Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. What great news to hear you are beginning to get relief from your sick and nauseous feelings. I imagine how much you are wanting your March GI appointment to hurry up and get here. I remain hopeful with you that your doctors recommendations will continue to improve all things digestion. Hang in there!

I have struggled with my digestion and understand where you are. Unfortunately, I did not have one single thing that fixed it. It has taken diet, exercise, medications and pelvic floor therapy all introduced at various times to recognize improvement. I have had to remind myself at times that it certainly did not get so bad overnight so expecting a quick fix was unrealistic. I say this hoping you find encouragement to stick with your doctor(s), their professional advice and your ability to work the plan.

You mention several over-the-counter things you have been taking. Are you only taking Metamucil now, or did you add it to the MiraLax and stool softeners? I am full of questions…Have you noticed if exercising helps? Have you had a chance to let your doctor know how you are feeling after the last change of adding Metamucil?

Once a day
MiraLAX is intended to be taken once a day for treating occasional constipation. It is not recommended to take it more than once a day, as doing so can increase the risk of side effects such as diarrhea and bloating. If you need to use MiraLAX for longer than one week, consult a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate course of action.

Hi Crazycat3us,
I'm so sorry that you are having constipation issues and other problems! That can't be pleasant. I can reccomend a home remedy for constipation that my Grandmother and Mom both used and gave me when I was growing up. I'm 79 and still use it when it's needed.

Put a tablespoon of Baking Soda (Arm and Hammer like you bake with.) in a glass of water. Stir well and drink the whole glass. It tastes terrible but it works and is natural. It won't hurt you. My Mom was giving it to me when I was 8 years old. Stay close to the bathroom. It works fairly fast. You can add some lemon juice if you want to help with the awful taste. After you drink it try and drink some more water to keep from being dehydrated. Besides water helps elimination. This also gets rid of gas and bloating.
I hope this helps you.

Thank you for the suggestion

You might want to be careful about the baking soda. Any form of sodium like that makes my constipation even worse. Hopefully it'll work for you; but maybe not.
