Severe Constipation

Posted by klk464 @klk464, Feb 28, 2018

I have had severe constipation for a long time. I drink lots of water and have had almost every test possible done and tried many prescription medications. These medications work for a little bit then stop. I currently take 3 docusate in morning and at night I will take 2 senna/docusate. I still dont have a daily BM. So i get bloated crampy and back pain from this.

I was told I could go to the Mayo Clinic as they may have ideas for me because they are out of options for me here.

Anyone else suffer from this?

I swear by a daily probiotic and daily magnesium citrate 400 mgs.

I agree. I take Life Extension Daily bowel maintenance and mag citrate 400mgs at bedtime with a little aloe vera gel. What brand of mag citrate and probiotics do you take?

On kale, collards, turnip greens, etc, cut out the stems with a kitchen scissors and cook longer. Also, you can juice them fresh. You can also food process them into a baby food consistency.

I have had chronic constipation since birth. I am now 54 years old. I have ran out of laxatives to try. I went to a gastroenterologist a couple of years ago who did a marker test (nothing moved) and then attempted to do a colonoscopy but I told him beforehand that the solution did not clean me out so of course it came back inconclusive because it wasn’t cleaned out. He diagnosed me with colonic inertia and prescribed Linzess which sort of worked for a while then it started making me nauseous and not working. I started taking Miralax every day at the suggestion of a different doctor, that worked for a while and now it just makes me sick and doesn’t work either. I have an appointment with yet another gastroenterologist next month. I go weeks without a bowel movement sometimes 4-6 weeks and of course I feel miserable. Anyone else have the same issue?

Regarding Prunelax, the active ingredient is Senna which is a stimulant laxative, same as Senokot or generic brands. There is very little prune extract in Prunelax, some packages list plum extract content at .01 or .02mg which is little better than zero.

I have severe constipation. I have always been constipated but this is on a whole different level. I do suffered from automatic small fiber neuropathy and I am quite sure I have a motility issue. I have tried every single thing mentioned in the comment excluding prescription drugs. Not a single one helped, they worked for a short period of time. I currently take six magnesium citrate tablets along with two Phillips Laxative tablets before bed. This seems to work well but occasionally I have to use a small enema. I buy the tiny fleet enemas or the CVS small enemas. They are really small so I don’t mind and now the need is less than it was. I took the smart pill test to see what was going on and my gastroenterologist said she was presenting my results to a panel of doctors who go over difficult cases. I have a tele-health visit on January 3rd and I should know more then.

Thanks Diane,

Magnesium citrate and some prunes seem to help with my constipation. But I have to be near a bathroom. I have yet to find a dose of magnesium citrate that relieves constipation w/o resulting in diarrhea. Frustrating but better than being constipated. I've asked for recommendations but everyone is different.

I've tried Linzess. Nothing. I'm going to try Motegrity next as it's a motility medicine.

I found Prunelax at Walmart. My preference is Senokot and snacking on prunes.

Did Prunelax work? I think that contains Senna leaves. Thanks! Joe

I only used the Prunelax once. Senokot is still my #1 go-to.

What more do you have to do. I suffer from this a lot. Magnesium citrate, liquid, helped me, but since the recall, there is none. It bums me out, because it would help me once in a while. I did get the fiber capsules, but I'm still backed up. Going to ask Dr maybe to increase my Reglan (sp)? The constant bloating just sucks. And honestly watch the water. I think the levels of chlorine they are putting in the water are hurting a lot of people's digestive systems, because it's poison. My water is so bad at my house, the city won't do anything but call the cops on me, while my health deterriates. And now have to pay culligan for safe drinking water for my family and pets. Just be careful. Stomach pills is a huge money maker. Any advice on being more regular would be helpful. I'm only taking 2 capsules a day, maybe I need more? It's the one with the phylum husks (sp).
Thank you and God Bless.
