COMPRESSION FRACTURES R/T OSTEOPOROSIS

Posted by harryboy7 @harryboy7, Jul 20, 2025

I ask this question because I have severe Osteoporosis. I currently have a burst fracture, compression fracture and a wedge fracture. All around T8. The pain is awful!. I was wondering if others have ever experienced a compression fracture, and how they survived it. I am 70 years old. I feel my body is just falling apart. I am normally an active person. My life is now sedentary which is now affecting my mental health.

It has been 9 weeks for me. I have been crying everyday. I have been in so much pain. Plus I live alone. It is hard to be super active then sedentary. Several months prior to the spine injury, I fell and broke my elbow. Had surgery. Now my spine. I don't feel hopeful. However, reading your post gave me hope. Thank you. I am glad you are doing well.

Sounds like a bad one-two punch for you (elbow then spine). I wondered if I would ever be able to move again. It has been slow, but I have been regaining strength. I, too, have been physically active for all of my life. My mental health depends on it! Have you thought about talking to a mental health professional about your mood? Are you able to take anything for pain? I took acetaminophen every 4 hours for many weeks. Sounds very hard.

I am staring Tymlos this month , I resisted because of the daily shot and side effects . I have a friend that just had her first Evenity shot without any side effects - it seems to be a better drug to build bone quickly but I was afraid of black box warning . Can you say why you chose Tymlos ?

My Dr said Evenity would be better after I am finished with my Forteo to maintain my bone density and maybe increase it. Not sure how all this goes but I feel better 9 M later. No side effects for me thank god .

I feel like I can relate to your pain and fear. I went through something very similar and ended up with 13 consecutive compression fractions. I credit Forteo with saving my life as was ready to sign up for MAID. The daily injection is not a big deal. More like an epi-pin and quite doable once you get the hang of it. Just book and appointment with the pharmacist for your first injection/lesson and you will be fine. I did 24 months of injections, as was in such bad shape. Initially had to use a walker to get back on my feet and slowly began to recover. I still use a back brace from time to time if I am going to be gardening or vacuuming. It has been 8 years and I maintained well with one shot of Prolia for maintenance and then Raloxifene . I had very insignificant decline over those 8 years, that incrementally added up to needing another round of Forteo. I am currently on my 9th month and will do a bone density test at 12 months. I take it at night, and only found initial side effects of some light headedness, headache and tummy upset. All doable and subsided after 6-8 weeks. I have lost 4 inches in height, but back on treadmill daily and some light weights. You can do it. But sounds like you really need a bone builder like Forteo. I am on the generic brand this time around, and it is cheaper and partially covered by my insurance. Also, once I was able to, I walked back and forth chest height in the pool and this helped me tremendously in my initial recovery. I hope you get good help and support. It does get better : )

Wow what a story. I am so sorry for that journey. But happy you are doing better. Thank you for your support. This support group is so wonderful. It really does help to be able to talk to women who are going through the same thing.

No side effects at all on the pen whatsoever. Forteo works great for me.👍 and doesn't cost me a dime.
Was approved for extra help with prescriptions. Another plus.

How has your journey been on Forteo and what side effects have you encountered? What will you do afterwards?
