Colonoscopy during bowel inflammation
I recently went to a gastroenterologist and he wants me to have a colonoscopy and an endoscopy, but I was reading online that it can be dangerous if you have bowel inflammation which I definitely do. It showed up on a CAT scan I had last December and it’s still there. Has anyone had any experience with having a colonoscopy during inflammation? The doctor (actually, I didn’t even get to see the doctor - I met with a nurse practitioner) didn’t even ask any questions about what I eat or prior stomach problems or anything. Has anyone had better luck with a functional medicine doctor? I don’t trust traditional medicine anymore. Thank you. I did agree to have another CAT scan with angio.

Sorry you are dealing with this. You are smart to ask a lot of questions and research this. After my 2020 colonoscopy, I was extremely ill for at least two years with heightened lower left pain in abdominal area and back lower left and almost immediate loss weight from 148 to 118. Eating was painful no matter what I ate. I had been earlier diagnosed with Crohn's, but I was told that the pain from Crohn's should be on my right, so I swallowed a camera, did endoscopy, but no clear answer. My suspicion was the PPG Polyethylene Glycol in the Prep, but all doctors I saw would not venture an opinion. (By the way, my Crohn's was the constipation type, not the diarrhea type.) Best wishes on finding answers.
Thank you so much for that info. I am so sick lately I don’t know what to do and I just feel like going to a traditional doctor is just gonna make things worse, as you confirmed. I’m about 90% sure I have SIBO and I know that a traditional doctor won’t know how to treat that. They’ve let me down time and again. And yet I’ve never really gotten much help from a naturopath or a functional medicine doctor either and they’re so expensive and of course insurance doesn’t pay for them. But at least they don’t do stuff that makes you worse. I’m so sorry that you’re having to go through that. There’s nothing worse than not being able to eat and being in pain all the time. I’m already down to 82 pounds and I think I’ll die if I lose anymore, so I’m really scared. Have you ever tried any functional medicine doctors or alternative doctors? I have had one referral from a woman I know on a zoom group, but he’s quite a drive from me, but I could maybe make it. I was gonna go ahead and schedule my colonoscopy since I’m having such trouble, and then I woke up this afternoon having grave doubts and then saw your message. I had a colonoscopy about 13 years ago and it was OK, but I know there are lots of risks involved. Again, thank you for the information and sharing your experience. I hope you can find an answer somehow. Good luck to you, too!
