Cologuard test positive: I'm terrified

Posted by char21 @char21, Dec 18, 2025

Just had a positive test. I have been having bleeding for years. I know it’s my fault, I am 67 and terrified. My gastroenterologist appointment is January 8th

I know that with these tests that false and positive results are common, this can occur because if there’s even a slight amount of blood in the specimen it can cause this result. On a more positive note you have an appointment to see the doctor and follow up with further testing, also, getting a negative result can be more risky because there’s people who used this test and they had a negative result so they believe it’s all good only to find out later that it was incorrect. When you see the doctor they will most likely order a colonoscopy to further determine whether it is a positive result or not.
If know that colonoscopies are unpleasant, I recently had it done too but it’s the best way to get the right results and they can remove the polyps right away, I hope that helps you a little more, best wishes.

@frouke my doc doesn’t recommend cologuard test….too many false results and people often are referred for a colonoscopy anyhow—-the docs can remove polyps and evaluate the colon thoroughly— that can be life-saving.

I was a positive results denied that could be true for me but it was true After being jerked around by 2 locate hospitals I came to Mayos for treatment Two years later of truff treatments I am cancer free, knock on wood please, and am now in the ever 3 months for check up If I had gone with the 2 locate hospitals I was told go die or other one wanted to do major surgery & then live with a bag I choose the treatment from Mayo No surgery no bag and I am alive Stand up for yourself and don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand It is your body & your life

@nycmusic, I think that a good doctor would never give it to their patients but sometimes the patient will insist that they don’t want to have a colonoscopy so perhaps it’s better than having nothing, it’s a personal choice and at the end of the day they cause more anxiety with false positives or negatives.

I had a colonguard test in October and it came back positive. I just saw colon doctor today because I was dealing with an obstructing kidney stone that had to be dealt with. The doctors nurse set up a colonoscopy for me for February. I asked her if that was risky for me to wait that long and she assured me that it wasn't. I am so very scared about this whole thing. Can anyone offer anything positive about my situation

My message may appear twice if so I'm sorry I just joined and got confused. Anyway I had a positive Colonguard test in October. I just saw colon doctor today. His office scheduled colonoscopy for February. I asked if it was risky for me to wait that long they said no. I am so scared about this whole thing. The outcome terrifies me and the waiting to find out

It’s very hard to wait for testing and it causes our minds to wander into dark places, I’m speaking from experience but sometimes I find that the fear I was experiencing was all for nothing. It’s also good to know that polyps can take up to 10 years to become malignant so hopefully if you get check ups it will benefit you more. I have to wait 6 months for another ct scan because I have a nodule that’s starting to change, being a two time cancer survivor, the doctor was even prepared to wait a year but I said no, it is truly overwhelming at times but I see children who are fighting for their lives and this truly impacts me like nothing else, good wishes on your test results and stay strong.
