Colestipol for symptoms of IBS-D

Posted by richannc @richannc, Nov 8, 2017

Has anyone had any experience with talking colestipol for treating the recurring diarrhea that is part of the IBS-D syndrome? My gastro prescribed it and it does seem to minimize diarrhea if taken twice a day. I would appreciate hearing form anyone who has tried it.

I have been taking colestipol for 2 years to control horrific diarrhea; yup—I,used to know/plan shopping around bathrooms! My gallbladder was removed over 50,years ago. Due to joint inflammation and uveitis, I’ve been on a humira biologic for 5 months. I used to,take 2–3 colestipol /day but now, take 1 before bed. The diarrhea is gone except for an occasional flare. I do,adhere to a low-fat diet; Bile acid malabsorption is not, uncommon after gall bladder removal yet it is,under disgnosed in the US ; In fact, the testing is widely available in Europe but not in US. best wishes!

Taking 2 colestipol made me constipated, so now I just take one at bedtime. When I wake up I usually go and sometimes it is loose and sometimes I really have to push. So it still seems I am all over the board, but certainly better than a year ago. Most days I usually have at least 2 BM's, but for some reason I still do not make morning appointments.
