Coffee and Neuropathy

Posted by judyfrey @judyfrey, Apr 5, 2022

I've had neuropathy for years and currently take Lyrica to control the pain. It is only partly effective. Several months ago I read on a forum that coffee can reduce the neuropathy pain. I realize that most medical professionals advise cutting coffee intake but one night when I was about out of my mind with the tingling sensations I decided to drink a cup. Within 30 minutes the pain was reduced enough that I was able to go back to sleep. Luckily, coffee does not seem to affect my ability to sleep so now it is my go-to when I wake up with neuropathy pain.

I'll post what my neurologist says about this and more. I should be hearing from him this week. Interesting that neuropathy hasn't had more interest from the specialists who simply say 'there is no cure.'

I use to drink 8-10 cup of coffee a day….mainly for energy….but cut back to 2 cups a day first thing in AM. And that works….my brain seems wakeup and to fall into place. I did try decaffeinated but it felt awful on my stomach…tea made me feel bloated….I was told I had neuropathy. I have no pain but my feet and hands are always cold….(holding the warm coffee cup helps with that)Because I am pre-diabetic and CKD3 I dilute each of my coffees(4oz))with 12oz of water and 1Tbs 35% cream…..this way I get a big amount of liquid without carbs. The rest of the day I drink hot water with a slice of lemon. This seems to work, I am able to work in the studio without loss of energy until around 5-6pm. I also bounce on my toes and rub my hands to warm them and long arm-stockings keep them warm. I hope this helps someone.

I did hear back from my neurologist. They indicated that caffeine may cause an electrolyte imbalance and also dehydration. Suggested that perhaps I see a physical therapist or consider a magnesium supplement/both. I'll cut the caffeine for a week and see if that helps. Bob

I tried CBD but nothing happened. After a week of no caffeine I'm starting to feel a bit better. I'm also taking 400mg of Magnesium daily. I'll see how that works in another week. I found that the Trader Joes instant cold brew I was drinking has 100mg of caffeine in each teaspoon....I was consuming 2,000mg a day!!! RDA max is 400mg. It's no wonder, eh?!

What brand of CBD oil do you take? I have 3CHI comfortable numb 600mg which is in the photos. It works to help with pain at night and to help me sleep. I need to see what will work during the day. The market seems to be flooded with so much CBD oil that you can buy it at gas stations to Ma and pa stores. How do you know what is good without trying the thousands of CBD oils out there?

I tried a magnesium supplement but it upset my stomach too much. Am now using a magnesium lotion on my legs to help with the pain and to have it absorbed into my body to avoid the stomach issues. I think it helps a bit but I have so much pain most of the time I really don’t know. But it’s also helping with my dry skin. 😊
