Clonazepam, should I quit taking it..

Posted by twray @twray, Aug 17 7:24am

I have had Generalized Anxiety Disorder and currently taking 20mg Lexapro for over 10 years and .125 Clonazepam 2x a day for the last 2 years.
Recently nothing seems to be working and not doing well. I'm not sure if the Clonazepam has stopped working.
My questions is if you have an anxiety disorder is it actually possible to taper of Clonazepam?

I believe that it’s possible to wean yourself off the Clonazepam as long as you’re being assisted by a doctor, I’m sure that you know this drug is not easy to just stop taking them and the doctor might want to give you something else to help you with the withdrawal. I take Ativan which is in the same category as Clonazepam and I also take a low dosage of Amitriptyline which is an older antidepressant that I can tolerate. I hope that you get the help you need and good wishes.

Very possible, especially at the extremely low dose you are on.

Hi there, I am curious how much ativan you take? I am on the same regime as you with the amitriptyline at 10mg per night. I also take .75-1mg ativan daily and am trying to reduce that now. Thank you.

I take 0.5mg in the morning and 0.5mg at night, I’ve never spoken to anyone here that uses Amitriptyline, it’s the only one I can tolerate with antidepressants, all of the newer ones make me feel sick so I stay with this one.

Thanks, that is about my current dose as well. Trying to taper off but the process is very slow. My gastro doc is going to retire in the next couple of years, and I just don't want to have to deal with his replacement not willing to continue prescribing. I have read lots about that problem and do not want that anxiety in my life. I actually take nortriptyline which is in the same family as the amitriptyline but supposedly works a bit better on gastro pain so they tell me. It is being used "off label" for me for that. No side effects but if I increase the dose to 20mg I def feel pretty rummy in the morning. 🙁

Yes. I was tapered off in 2018 under medical supervision. Took 7 months. One of the better decisions I made. I have never resumed taking any type of benzo.

I'd be very careful with taking any benzodiazapines. I was on both Xanax and klonopin at times. They are horrible for mental health. I'd research them related to worsening anxiety. They aren't meant for long-term use, as I found out the really hard way. I was in a nightmare of withdrawal that I thought I wouldn't live through. Also, studies are finding nutrient deficiencies are causing anxiety and depression. Magnesium is especially critical for the brain and nervous system. But there are numerous types of magnesium, so ensure it's magnesium glycinate. I take a supplement with all forms.
Since I added various nutrients to my diet, I no longer have anxiety. It didn't help the depression, but that's the situation I'm living in, so not surprising.

Yes, tapering is possible, but must be done very slowly.

Yes, I did a 2.5 mg taper to 1mg on my own. I too had severe withdrawal from klonopin. I did a super slow taper with a Dr monitoring me. They added gabapentin 900mg daily, 3 doses of 300mg. After 4 months, I am off klonopin but am still struggling with intrusive memories and anxiety. I was told to hang in there. It is so hard but worth it. After 15 yrs of klonopin, I am more clear headed and my balance is much better. Good luck.

At a dose of 0.125 mg, I don't see how you can taper any further just logistically cutting the tablet.......would literally be a crumb. What does your physician say? The dose is almost negligible!
