Cipro/Antibiotic question. I am super anxious

Posted by desidawn @desidawn, Sep 26, 2023

I just took a 250 mg pill of Cipro Sunday around 5 pm to help with a UTI. After I took the dose I looked up Cipro to see what family of antibiotics it belonged to, only to find that Cipro can cause a lot of severe side effects with some coming on later after it is taken. I have health anxiety, and am worried that that single 250 mg dose will lead to the severe side effects listed. Apparently people call this pill a poison because it has caused nerve damage, joint ruptures, mental health issues, nervous system issues of all kinds, and even suicide. Does anybody have any input on this pill? Should I be concerned?

I've taken it many times without incident.

If the antibiotic upsets your stomach, my pharmacist recommends a probiotic with maximum live cultures; that worked quickly for me recently. Everything I read and the pharmacist said do not stop taking the antibiotic. They are prescribed for a fixed short period of time. Please consult with your pharmacist about your concerns.

Just to add to the confusion re: Cipro was the third antibiotic I was prescribed for my UTI. At first I took a round of ampicillin, then cephalexin and then Cipro. My urine cultures taking the first two didn't change. I go back for another culture on Monday to see if I've cleared the UTI infection. BUT....what I did find that DID give me pretty quick relief from the 'feeling' 'down there' was an hour after I took Nature's Way CRANRx. Got it at Kroger's..OTC. Within an hour after taking the two delicious tablespoons..I no longer had any stinging type feelings..'down there'.....
Good luck! So far, I haven't had any bad reactions to any of the antibiotic rounds I did do. I did give up caffeine, sugar, wine and also probiotics..as I saw that it could interfere with Cipro. Now I'm back on the probiotics, but not the other things until I can see that I'm totally over this infection. No fun at all! I'll continue to take the CranRX for a while..finish the bottle. adding the D-mannose as well as 1,000mg of standardized cranberry extract found in this OTC drink is making a difference I never felt with any of the antibiotics I did take. Good luck! Hope this helps.

@desidawn speak to your pharmacist. If the pharmacist your regular pharmacy is not helpful, speak to another. I have found pharmacists to be more knowledgeable about drugs and side effects than most doctors are. If you have a friend who is a nurse, talk to him/her, too. Nurses and pharmacists have been my go to for any medication advice.

Also, take Greek yoghurt and probiotics - 30 billion+ cultures daily to replace the good bacteria that is lost along with the bad while in the antibiotic.

Desidawn (or anybody else who may be able to address these concerns)- have you found out any additional info as to the possible affects on anxiety with Cipro? I am in a similar situation. Was diagnosed with a MILD UTI. Was being seen for something else when they detected the UTI. The day i was in that hospital I was was given 2 - 500 mg tablets CIPRO., one in the morning, the other, that night. After release on Saturday, I was prescribed the 5 day course of CIPRO. So, as you did, before I took the morning dose today (Sunday) I looked up info and saw the horrific potential side effect of severe anxiety, possibly permanent. I struggle with anxiety as it is, non medicated as I prefer minimal meds. I have high BP/HR which is why I was in the hospital. I have taken meds for that for years. I fit all the criteria for susceptibility to those side effects. I am so scared now, worsening the anxiety I already had, that the 1,000 mg dose could harm me. All for a minor UTI that I know from past experience could be handled with a less 'dangerous' RX.

I have taken Cipro over a number of years for chronic UTIs with no side effects then or now.

Because UTI can become complicated if not treated, it’s important to find something that will work to get rid of the infection, not just make the symptoms feel better. I hate meds, but took CIPRO after a severe open fracture to prevent bone infection. I had no issues at the time but am wary of antibiotics in general. I agree, talk to your pharmacist.

@nita378 I took a course of Flagyl and Cipro last summer for 10 days (but i quit 2 days early due to side effects). Anxiety was one of them. And, it lasted for over a month. Never had side effects from Cipro before, so i think it was the Flagyl. Finally after 6 weeks my doctor put me on Lorazepam which brought down the anxiety and helps me sleep. After the Flagyl/Cipro treatment Ambien stopped working for me, my BP went very high (anxiety - but Lorazepam has helped that), and had a few other notable changes. Perhaps reading about the anxiety caused some of it - but i think most of it was real side effect. Your treatment is shorter, so hopefully the reaction will be less and short-lived.

@ezjersey719 Yes, talk to your pharmacist and doctor. Probiotics made me constipated, and between them and the antibiotics i got black hairy tongue. My dentise prescribed a mouthwash and advised brushing my tongue. all better in a few weeks.

@berekann did you have to continue with the lorazepam after one month or did the symptoms finally go away? Thank you so much for your reply.
