Chronic wrist pain

Posted by heisenberg34 @heisenberg34, Feb 18 7:27am

My wife has had bad pain in her right wrist. Began about six months ago. Diclofenac Sodium helps. She is wondering if a cortisone shot might be helpful. Anyone have a similar experience? If so, what has helped you?
Thanks, Dover Guy

Carpel tunnel? I wear a wrist guard at night especially. Overtime it has helped.

Hi @heisenberg34, I have some left wrist pain from carpal tunnel and also have a thumb joint that gives me some grief once in awhile on my left hand. Early on I had a cortisone shot and it helped a little. There is another discussion where members shared their experience with wrist pain that I think you might find helpful.

Here's some diagnosis and treatment information from Mayo Clinic on wrist pain - https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/wrist-pain/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20366215.

Has your wife seen a hand specialist or had any physical therapy?

Cortisone really helps most of the time. One time the dr hit a bone and I hit the ceiling! The injection itself hurts but within a couple of days I feel such relief!

Did your wife get a diagnosis? Steroid injections can help, but they can also be temporary if you have trouble figuring out what’s causing the problem and re-injure it again.

I also have chronic right wrist pain, but on the outer (lateral) side from a sprain. I saw a hand specialist, but he was no help. My PCP referred me to an occupational therapist (OT). They specialist in hand and upper extremity injuries or limitations, splinting/bracing, and adaptations for disability or injury. She’s been amazing and way more help than a doctor. She recommended the correct type of splint and when to wear it, along with exercises to improve it after the pain calmed down, plus recommendations on how to adapt to do things while I’m recovering.

That could help as well, in addition to or after steroid injection perhaps.

Thanks. I’m sending this to my wife.

I think she needs to find out if it is osteoarthritis or carpal tunnel . If arthritis she could get a steroid injection but they r painful. Great relief but painful injection. You can also do low dose radiation therapy for osteo joints.

What does she do for work, hobbies, etc?
