Myelomalacia: Let's connect

Posted by lanieg @lanieg, Feb 23, 2023

I recently had a MRI of my cervical spine and moderate to severe myelomalacia was discovered. I already have a C3 to C5 fusion. Symptoms include pain in arms, neck and shoulders, off balance, light headed, difficulty picking up small items. Has anyone else experienced this diagnosis? What has been done about it? Seeing a neurosurgeon soon but not excited about another neck surgery. However what I read about it says if left untreated could cause serious nerve issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@lanieg Hello. I am a fellow cervical spine surgery patient. Could you be more specific about your prior surgery and if you also had myelomylacia at that time or is that a new development? Did the radiologist compare the new imaging with prior imaging of the same area? Are there new problems with spinal cord compression at other places of spine degeneration than before? How long has it been since the first surgery?

Hi
I had my first surgery in 2015. It was a fusion of c3-c5. The MRIs were done at different hospitals. Since there wasn't anything in the report, I doubt there was a comparison. However I will see the original surgeon this coming week and will talk to him about that. Since I've had several MRIs between 2015 and now, no one has ever mentioned myelomalacia as an issue. Anxious to see the surgeon.
Thanks for inquiring.
