Chronic Abdominal pain with no diagnosis

Posted by ashutosh1991 @ashutosh1991, Aug 30, 2025

Hello everyone, I am suffering from chronic upper left abdominal pain for past month and the severity of pain took me to emergency 3 times in last 3 weeks. I had my blood work, xray, ultrasound and gastroscopy done all the test came out fine. Doctors don’t know what’s wrong with me. When pain starts it last for 4-5 hours and happens atleast twice a day (which is almost whole day). No diet or dietary restrictions helping. Please suggest relief if anyone have any idea

@peterose yes clothes are great. I’m a big lover of Ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, and all the other great herbs that are used as medicinal. However, the problem is that when we get older, our digestive tracks can’t function like they did when they were younger. So certain foods need to be removed from the diet and that’s where the FODMAP comes in. It is university proven it is freely accessible. There are many rip offs of their basic principles that people like Dr. Gundry charge for which is insanity because it’s available for free. The acronym stands for the five groups that the body can no longer digest and process. It doesn’t matter how many herbs and things you eat. You just can’t digest certain things. It seems to run and be inherited in families. Unfortunately, I inherited an inability to eat garlic and onions, and they were ripping up my intestines along with lactose and gluten. I took genetic tests. I inherited lactose intolerance from both my parents, so it is impossible for me to digest anything with lactose not only that with cow casein. I am missing enzymes that allow for digestion. The FODMAP diet teaches you how to switch out foods and heal your gut. I am so much better after seven years. I can’t even tell you. For the first three years, I would widen my diet too much and then I’d have to start all over again and now at about seven years I’m finding a leak equilibrium. Along the way, I found a lot of substituting Which I have maintained to this day. For example, eating Green scallion tops and growing those because they’re easy to digest and they don’t have the inulin. After seven years, I am back to a traditional turkey stuffing, which has ingredients like celery that I couldn’t digest the celery strings have in. I could have a little celery in the stuffing and it was fine. I can have fermented bread, fine I can eat fermented cheeses, goat, cheeses, and farmers cheeses. I have found that all my traditional Sephardic cooking recipes all use foods that show me that my ancestors knew they can’t couldn’t digest lactose and gluten. It’s been a really interesting journey. I wish you good eating.

I am struggling with severe abdominal and back pain. When I get up in the morning my abdomen severely distended and it is painful and difficult to urinate (pain level 10). While sitting drinking my tea before breakfast I already have abdominal and back pain and no matter what foods I eat experience pain as soon as I start eating. After passing a stool (happens daily because the Dr had prescibed a daily laxative) there is no relief and the abdominal and back pain intensify (pain level 20). The pain gets so severe that it is difficult to even drink water and I am in pain when lying down, sitting or walking for the entire day. I was initially diagnosed with IBS in May but have no explanation for the severity of these current symptoms. The Dr prescribed a Sovenor 5 patch which didn't help the pain at all and I am now trying a fasting-acting sublinguinal opiod for some relief of the pain but it is not a long-term solution. Has anyone had a similar experience or can anyone offer me any advice as the Dr has no solution for this chronic severe pain?

@hayl I'm so sorry your having to deal with this with no answers. Do you have any hernias. My stomach is also destended I have had hernias for over 25 years no matter what I do they just keep coming back to the point now I don't want anymore surgery. They even found one by my colon it's awful to be in pain and the doctors just don't understand why. I really hope you find some answers. I'm here if you ever want to talk.

someone mentioned Olive oil acts like a natural laxative in the body in a couple of ways:
ANY OIL BETTER THAN OTHERS?
It stimulates bowel movements by lubricating the digestive system, making it more moist and easier for hardened stools to pass through.

I wanted to share in case everyone had anything similar and could offer some advice.

I've been having abdominal pain that suddenly started one month ago, and has continued to evolve. I've been to UC clinic, 2 general practitioners, and 3 GI specialists. My blood work has always been ok, ultrasounds nor X-rays show anything concerning (more than moderate constipation and gas), and even an upper endoscopy came out fine. Also had an abdominal CT scan 4 months ago (way before I had this issue) and nothing concerning, so doctor strongly recommends against another to avoid radiation exposure (I also want to avoid it). Also told that no colonoscopy is necessary since I have no blood in stools and I'm too young. So I've been just given medication for gastritis and some natural remedies and told to wait for it to get better, and some has even said it's just stress related so just take more probiotics. I've also been given some medication by another doctor just in case I've kidney stones.

However, I've had gastritis before and not only it hasn't lasted this long, it's always been pretty localized in the stomach. However, now I feel a burning sensation in the lower part of the abdomen (start and end of colon) as well as the sides (around kidney area), like if someone is pressing an iron constantly on those zones. I also randomly feel sharp bursts of pain in the upper left abdomen (liver area?), right middle abdomen (gallbladder?), and left middle abdomen, like if someone is piercing with a knife. The pain gets so bad that I'm woken up at night, and if I sit for a few minutes I also start having sharp pain around the bellybutton (small intestine).

I'm not sure what I could have and while the symptoms are manageable, I'm starting to get concerned since this is the first time I've had such pain. I'm also worried I may not have been emphasizing enough my symptoms and that causes them to discard them as something less severe. I'm male 33 yo.

@charliestone “more than moderate” constipation in a 33 year old doesn’t sound normal to me. There are tests that could be done but first you might try something like miralax (OTC) to resolve the constipation and see if this helps.

@peterose try at least an average price one and try it

think the best time to try it is when you are having a few good days and be patient..i was trying it but had no patience.........Senna Tea

just a thought....everyone appears to have the challenge of hard stools......there must be some research and medically approved recommendation ANDWARNINGS......we are spending our lives experimenting!

@hayl what has your work up consisted of? Any results worth sharing?

Maybe time to see a specialist. Converse with your GP about what treatment he suggests and perhaps recommend a specialist to analyze your medical condition, because pain in the abdomen may be harbinger of a serious condition. Or maybe see if the ED will admit you to the hospital for further testing and analysis beyond the capability of the emergency room.
