Chronic Abdominal pain with no diagnosis

Posted by ashutosh1991 @ashutosh1991, Aug 30 8:37pm

Hello everyone, I am suffering from chronic upper left abdominal pain for past month and the severity of pain took me to emergency 3 times in last 3 weeks. I had my blood work, xray, ultrasound and gastroscopy done all the test came out fine. Doctors don’t know what’s wrong with me. When pain starts it last for 4-5 hours and happens atleast twice a day (which is almost whole day). No diet or dietary restrictions helping. Please suggest relief if anyone have any idea

Years ago I had a similar problem before going on a trip to Australia. I went to a naturopathic doctor who ordered food sensitivity tests which revealed sensitivity to eggs, dairy and beans. These visits and tests are expensive but was so worth it. Hope this helps

Mine is all over stomach at times. I think it is my colon. I have to wait until next year to have colonoscopy.

I'm having a scope for gastric contractions of the stomach shown on a scan. I had to point it out to my doctor! Then he said we could proceed with test. I also have UC and IBS so I don't think he'll find anything. I've been thru so many colonoscopies that say I'm in remission with Entyvio. Anyone else gone thru this test and was anything found?

I went to the ER twice in 2006/2007. They couldn't find anything. YEARS LATER, I figured out it was garlic and onions. I could no longer digest them and they caused trapped gas. Try the FODMAP diet. I went to TWO gastroenterologists and they scoped everything! I ended up being Lactose and gluten intolerant by 2018, and I could no longer digest inulin either! IF it is food related the FODMAP will help you puzzle piece your intolerance. https://www.monashfodmap.com/ibs-central/i-have-ibs/starting-the-low-fodmap-diet/
Oh, also I had SIBO get a test for that. The clue is your "4 to 5 hour" thing twice a day. Its either SIBO (for which I take Xifaximin a targeted antibiotic) or a digestive intolerance. You didn't say your age or your diet so its a little hard to help more. But since you've probably looked to see if there's a food consistancy problem in the mix, I'll bet its the SIBO. Get tested and find out.

I suffered for 5 years with a pain in my upper quadrant of the body. About the area that you have pain in. I ended up in the ER every month with severe pain in upper right abdomen. I was given morphine and I had a standing order in how to help me. I would scream in pain. I had every test possible in those 5 yrs, I mean every test. I would run a low grade fever for 5 years. My Dr at the time actually sat on the floor next to me and said he has no idea what is wrong. He really did care. Then decide on exploratory surgery to see if they can see it that way. I had a surgeon open me up from top to bottom, the told me he had everything out on the table looking for anything to cause such a pain. He found it. I had a leaky diverticulum and Crohn's. I had 12 inches of my colon removed a that time. I am not saying that is what you have but maybe? Where my pain was, had no relationship to where the problem was. That might be the same for you. They need to look else where. I was written up in a medical journal by my Dr because he never heard of anything like this.

Im so glad you had an excellent Dr.
I had a severe injury to my abdominal wall, which became very serious. Despite being bedridden for 6 yrs, loosing 30 lbs from 110 to 78, being massively bloated like 7 months pregnant no one would do exploratory. Pain was horrendous.
Around my 18th time in ER over 6 years I basically threatened to committ suicide, the only reason, I got laparoscopy was due sn enlarged appendix. My abdominal wall was indeed torn.
Those 6 years of neglect have had a domino effect on my health and I now have CRPS badly.
Im happy to know there are still some good Drs. Im in Fl. Healthcare here isn't the best. Be well !!

I wanted to share in case everyone had anything similar and could offer some advice.

I've been having abdominal pain that suddenly started one month ago, and has continued to evolve. I've been to UC clinic, 2 general practitioners, and 3 GI specialists. My blood work has always been ok, ultrasounds nor X-rays show anything concerning (more than moderate constipation and gas), and even an upper endoscopy came out fine. Also had an abdominal CT scan 4 months ago (way before I had this issue) and nothing concerning, so doctor strongly recommends against another to avoid radiation exposure (I also want to avoid it). Also told that no colonoscopy is necessary since I have no blood in stools and I'm too young. So I've been just given medication for gastritis and some natural remedies and told to wait for it to get better, and some has even said it's just stress related so just take more probiotics. I've also been given some medication by another doctor just in case I've kidney stones.

However, I've had gastritis before and not only it hasn't lasted this long, it's always been pretty localized in the stomach. However, now I feel a burning sensation in the lower part of the abdomen (start and end of colon) as well as the sides (around kidney area), like if someone is pressing an iron constantly on those zones. I also randomly feel sharp bursts of pain in the upper left abdomen (liver area?), right middle abdomen (gallbladder?), and left middle abdomen, like if someone is piercing with a knife. The pain gets so bad that I'm woken up at night, and if I sit for a few minutes I also start having sharp pain around the bellybutton (small intestine).

I'm not sure what I could have and while the symptoms are manageable, I'm starting to get concerned since this is the first time I've had such pain. I'm also worried I may not have been emphasizing enough my symptoms and that causes them to discard them as something less severe. I'm male 33 yo.

Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, @charliestone. Having long lasting pain is hard. It colors your whole world.

You will note I moved your post here to an existing discussion on abdominal pain with no diagnosis. Hoping you can meet members such as @anniesezu812 @resilience @ashutosh1991
@joannehart and others who may weigh in on your symptoms and testing from their knowledge gained through personal experiences.

You mentioned pain wakes you up at night. Wondering how your symptoms affect you in the daytime? Are you able to work? Eat?
