Christmas Memories

Hi!
It's almost Christmas and I just wanted to share a nice Christmas memory with you.
It was the 1960’s and I was 21. (I’m now 78.) I was working as a nursing assistant in a nursing home for very rich people. It was Christmas Eve and I got off at 11 PM. Four of my patients were all rather sad since it was Christmas eve and they hadn’t heard from their any of their families. Mrs. C. had M.S. and couldn’t walk anymore. She said I always got the pillows under her legs just right! She shared a room with her husband, Mr. C. Mrs. S. had nothing wrong with her but because of her old age, the family felt it was better if she was in a nursing home. Mrs. S. and her now deceased husband who was a doctor had been one of the pioneer families in a small town where as she said, “The Indians would set up their teepees by our house to see my husband.” She also liked cats and kept letting in the one who hung around the back door of the nursing home which was right near her room. Miss Burns had breathing problems and had to walk slow. She wore 5 real diamond rings and refused to take them off; even for showers. She had a paid companion who was home that Christmas eve with her own family. I had no reason to go home right away since I lived with my mom and she was working the midnight to 7 AM shift at another nursing home. I suggested we all get together in Mr. and Mrs. C.’s room and sing Christmas carols and talk about Christmas’s past. Immediately, they all had smiles! Mr. C. had some Christmas cookies he shared and Miss B. brought some candy and Mrs. S. brought the cat! We visited, petted the cat, (who wasn't supposed to be in the nursing home.) ate the cookies and candy and sang Jingle Bells, and Silent Night and other carols. We had a wonderful time! I should explain that their rooms were all next to each other at the end of the hall, so we weren’t bothering anyone. They all said it was the nicest Christmas they ever had and it was for me too!

If anyone else has any Christmas memories they’d like to share, I’d love to hear them. This is the time of year when we have to remember the good times and the blessing of Jesus’ birth.

Merry Christmas!

pml, How precious your story was and thank you for doing this. I have 4 Christmas memories that are special to me.

1) As a little girl, we got a huge snow at Christmas and I got my bicycle with training wheels. Mama let me ride it in the house. What fun!

2) My first year of marriage and my wonderful husband came in with a golden retriever puppy under his coat and gave her to me as my Christmas gift. She brought much joy to us over the years.

3) My last Christmas with Mama & Daddy were extra special. Daddy went home to be with the Lord about a month later with a massive heart attack in his sleep. Mama went home to glory 13 years after Daddy passed away with painful bone cancer. Mama & I so enjoyed our last Christmas together. I was blessed to have wonderful parents.

Life goes on but, it is different once your parents are no longer here. "Precious memories flood my soul" as the hymn goes.

Also, my last Christmas with my in-laws who were like a 2nd set of parents to me. They had been married over 70 years and died 8 months apart and are now with the Lord. They were the best!

4) Christmas mornings when my children were small was so much fun! I miss my husband and I playing Santa and sleepily putting together those toys until 3 a.m. without any instructions. LOL.

I'm so glad that I know the true meaning of CHRISTmas, the birth of my Savior Jesus Christ. Luke 2:10-11/Isaiah 9:6.

Merry CHRISTmas to all of you and I pray next year is better healthwise and God blesses you all greatly.
Blessings & Prayers.....

What nice memories you have! Riding your new bike in the house and the puppy your husband gave you, the loved ones who are all up in heaven; are all good things to remember this time of year.

My husband died in July. I miss him terribly. We had 30 years of wonderful memories together; especially at Christmas. Still, I feel good that he is spending Christmas up in Heaven with God and Jesus, his family, my mom and our cat, Snoopy. Also he's no longer breathless. He had lung cancer.
Merry Christmas!

Thank you both sharing those memories. Brings me back to my childhood, such good times. The one day of the year no one had to try get me out of bed.
