Chiropractic treatment for back pain and osteopenia

Posted by lgerkin @lgerkin, May 17, 2023

I've had chronic back pain for some time and have been to several chiropractors and physical therapists. I've had some improvement when the chiropractor used an activator tool but not as much when they used soft tissue manipulation. In the meantime, my bone density has decreased and I have osteopenia. I recently went to a chiropractor and asked him not to do adjustments but the muscle manipulation he did instead has made the pain worse (not the good soreness after a treatment, but pain). Does anyone have any experience/suggestions? Thanks

@lgerkin What I suggest is to look at this discussion about myofascial release therapy. MFR is done by a physical therapist or massage therapist who has this special training. It is a gentle slow way to stretch the tight fascia that is restricting movement. If stretching is forceful, it can tear fascial tissues and create scar tissue which adds to more tightness and that can increase pain. MFR work is also beneficial to treat tight surgical scar tissue. I have done MFR work with my physical therapist for treatment of TOS (thoracic outlet syndrome), and post surgical issues with spine surgery and a fractured ankle. I recommend it, and most people can benefit from it.

I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing back pain and that going to the chiropractor made it worse. I have osteoporosis in my upper and lower spine and no longer let anyone massage my back because of that. I’m starting to learn how to do Tai Chi. It’s an excellent way to stretch muscles without doing any damage.

I have osteoporosis in my lower back. After exercising on an elliptical for about a month, I am feeling much better. All my hip pain is gone. I also started using the COMB protocol for osteoporosis. It involves specific vitamins and minerals. It is proven in studies to build new bone and reverse osteoporosis. I won’t know for a year

Be careful. I went to a chiropractor for years and it helped; however, when my vertebrae began to crumble I stopped going. I was afraid the manipulation would shift unstable bone toward my spinal cord. I now have a plate and 8 screws in my neck
