Can't decide which drug to take.
First time on a forum of any kind. Unsure how to do it. I'm 85 and need to go on something for OP. Evenity has been recommended followed by Prolia. I was on Fosamax at 63 which made me feel really sick and then threw up. Switched to Actonel and stayed on it for 7 years, got off at 70 because of reflux problems, then told to stay off it because of fracture risk for long term use. I'd moved so had new doc. Breast cancer at 76, lumpectomy w radiation, stopped HRT. DEXA recently at 85 showed "extreme" OP and current PC wants me on Something! I've refused for years because of side effects. Also during 2023 my husband of 38 years was dying and in hospice for 18 months at home, died in February 2024, so my mind was diverted there. Have developed horrible GERD, taken Protonix w pepcid, trying to taper off, but very hard to do, necessary because it eats yr bones.
After recent massage, I developed sharper pain than usual that hasn't gone away, my PC won't be surprised if I have a compression fracture in my spine. I've never had one so don't understand where it could really be. I've had 2 TIA's in 2023, so don't think Evenity is right, bisphosphonates wd make me sick, afraid of Evista, that leaves the two parathyroid meds Forteo and Tymlos which sound Awful! Any advice on what to pick wd be appreciated. I'm pretty scared!

Tymlos:
Effective Dosage of Tymlos
Recommended Dosage
The standard dosage of Tymlos (abaloparatide) for treating osteoporosis is 80 micrograms (mcg) administered once daily.
Minimum Effective Dose
There is no established minimum dose below 80 mcg that is proven effective for building bone. The recommended dose is based on clinical studies that demonstrated its efficacy in increasing bone density and reducing fracture risk.
I would ask…I know our Tymlos clinician said I could start a couple clicks lower (20mcg) but suggested starting full dose …it only a
Lasts a few hours and it gives you a place to go to if you feel you can’t handle the effects which may be mild anyway as they are for 90 plus percent of Tymlos patients
@osteopatient2026 I've been reading reviews of Tymlos on drugs.com, and the majority of them are very negative, many having to get off the drug. I don't understand the difference between there and here where I wd say the majority are positive and say side effects are often mild. Given me quite a jolt as I had become enthusiastic about Tymlos. With my medical history I can't take anything else except Prolia which doesn't Build bone. I'm allergic to bisphosphonates and have had 2 TIA's. My OP is designated "extreme" so I need to build bone. All very discouraging. My Reflux won't tolerate serious back pain and nausea, etc.
@laurabirdsong I started Tymlos a little over a month ago due to my terrible osteoporosis as well. I am 70 years old and was opposed to it at first but after fracturing my back again, I decided I needed to be serious now. I have no problems giving myself injections. I had an incredible nurse walk me through each step so when I actually did it for the first time that night, I knew exactly what to do. Only problem is remembering where I give myself the injection. Haha. But they send you a chart that you can use to mark your day on it. I find it very helpful! Now all I have to worry about is what I'm taking after the 2 years of this. 😉😊

5 ReactionsThanks for your story, it's SO good to know. I have a wonderful and competent CNA who will help me. I'm trying to get to an endocrinologist, none in the little town where I live, so I have to venture further out. May take quite a while, my PC wanting specialized guidance which is fine w me, so I'm in waiting mode!

2 Reactions@laurabirdsong yes the Tymlos injection pen does have a tailored dose to it. My dose says 80 MCG per dose. Now I understand why they said you could inject it slow if you want. I did it all at once the other night and it was seemed to sting a little bit. So I decided to make sure I inject it slower.😂
But I am very pleased with it since I don’t seem to have any side effects. I originally thought I was gaining some weight from it but I think I was eating too much Christmas candy already.😂 at least I hope that is what has happened. I am watching it very closely. My stomach does seem more bloated than normal and my my husband noticed it as well.
But like somebody responded to me, it’s a small price to pay for building my bone density. I just have to worry after my two years is over what to take after that. I know there are a couple options, but I will not take Prolia due to the bad affects some have had. I took it for a year and a half or 2 1/2 years and then had to stop for an emergency oral surgery. Apparently that is what caused my bones to be extra brittle and how I fractured my back by just tucking in my bedding at the foot of my bed. So thankfully, I found a wonderful Doctor who sent me to a Fracture clinic where they got me started on the Tymlos.

1 ReactionYours is a Very helpful account, thank you. If they let me have Tymlos, I'll remember about "slow dosing"! I've heard that about Prolia, the quick fractures after cessation and the oral problems. I have rather severe gum disease of long standing and my dentist didn't like Prolia for me, and one of my neighbors had 3 dental surgeries because of jaw problems while on it. Good luck.
