Can sweetener Saccharin help with MAC bacteria?

Posted by frankokush @frankokush, 1 day ago

There have been recent studies showing gut bacteria is killed by safe long-used saccharin. Somehow other bad bacteria get into the lungs supposedly due to water contaminants. If true could saccharin also help with the antibiotics used for MAC?

Hi, I saw that and was curious too. I'm going to NJH next week so I'll see if anyone knows there.

@ana323 & @frankokush - I did a look into Google Scholar, and so far they do not seem to be addressing lungs (anywhere) or mycobacteria (except in passing). This will be another of those "stay tuned for further information" matters.
There are unique issues posed by lungs & mycobacteria, including the extremely slow growth of most strains, the biofilm, and all the deep hiding places. These are why the antibiotics take so long to work.
I expect to see the studies look at MRSA and eColi first, because they affect so many people.

Gut bacteria activity and diversity are involved in maintaining good human health.

Thus, how can saccharin be considered "safe", if it kills gut bacteria?

@ana323 I see that you are going to NJH next week. Do you go once a year or is this your first visit. I ask because I have a question about induced sputum with a respiratory therapist at NJH.

Hi Barbara, This is my first visit. I noticed I have 2 appointments for that purpose. I'm hoping they can get a sample because it's a real challenge for me. My doctor here says they are very good at getting samples. I'm happy to ask them anything you would like. My first appointment is Tuesday,
12/9. Just let me know. Anastasia
