Can I take Hydroxyurea in a dab of applesauce?

Recently diagnosed with polycythemia Vera (PV). Clinic has not changed, but doctor has. Doctor #1 did a phlebotomy treatment. I am also on Eliquis due to a blood clot in my right jugular vein. I assumed Doctor #2 would continue with the phlebotomy treatments, but she is concerned that my low ferritin level (12) will put me more at risk for blood clots. She put me on Hydrea 500 mg per day, hoping to reduce the phlebotomies and increase the ferritin level. Just started 3 days ago. I have severe dry mouth due to radiation treatments for HPV caused oral cancer 7 years ago. I read the hint about having water in your mouth while swallowing this drug. Thanks! I take most of my meds for familial heart failure in a dab of applesauce. Can I do that with Hydrea?

Sounds like a good idea to me. I find my stomach does better if I take it with some food.

If you like dairy products, having a little milk in your mouth makes swallowing the capsule really easy.

I wouldn't let capsule melt into applesauce. If taken quickly with lots of water, maybe ok. I wet my mouth and throw in caps and IMMEDIATELY drink 8-10 ounces of water. I've read many end up with mouth sores and I suspect it's because caps started to melt in mouth, which is why I don't let it linger in my mouth. I also eat something about 1 hour before, and eat again a little an hour after to protect my esophagus and stomach.....I take a few spoonfuls of yogurt or cottage cheese. This is just my habit, no one told me to do it....just felt it would help

If the capsule begins to melt/dissolve in your mouth you may develop mouth sores. I take my nightly two capsules with water immediately after I toss them into my mouth (from container cap so as to avoid touching them). And, then I follow it with more water.
I guess if you took a little applesauce in your mouth, tossed in the capsule and then drank water, it would work. But, just don’t touch the capsules with your bare hands and don’t let them linger in your mouth.

I first swish water around my mouth and swallow it. Then I put the applesauce on a spoon, dump capsule on top, swallow and drink water, right before dinner. No meds linger on the applesauce. It is just an aid for swallowing. I don’t touch the capsule.
