Can anyone share their experience with Dutasteride (Avodart)?

Hi,

I'm 63 and have BPH and prostate cancer. The urologist told be not to worry about the cancer (Gleason 3 +3 = 6) and gave me Dutasteride (aka: Avodart) for the BPH. My prostate is large (62 CC) and I pee 3 times per night with some restriction in the flow. I haven't started Dutasteride because I'm concerned about the side effects (mainly developing aggressive cancer, sexual problem, and man-breasts).

Can anyone share their experiences with Dutasteride (good or bad) and specifically regarding these side effects? I have bad luck with side effects and don't want to make things worse.

Thanks
Joe

Well , I've been on it for less than a year. I had a hernia operation and I thought I had a significant side effect from that which I brought up with my urologist just yesterday. Who proceeded to inform.me that what I had experienced was a known side effect from the Dutasreride.
Some time ago. I noticed that my erect penis was not as big as I was used to.( Normally my solid erection. Pressed against my cell phone showed about 1/4" above the top of my phone) it was at least 1/4" BELOW the edge of my phone! So at least 1/2 " shorter! So I took a good look at my non erect penis ( flaccid)that too was smaller! In fact almost child like.!
The urination problem has certainly improved with the medication. But it certainly is a significant side effect. My Dr explained that the drug causes the prostate tissue d ur to shrink ..and also the penis..soft & hard! Somewhat embarrassing in a public shower situation.
I don't have a partner..but nevertheless I still indulge in and enjoy masturbation..and I do miss the length and girth of my normal penis. I also notice that erections are not so easy to stimulate and are less solid in nature..less firm!
Unfortunatly I think i have to accept it but I had a 6.5 " erection it is less than 6" about 5.5" now..I hope it does not continue to shrink.

I was prescribed Dutasteride six months ago as a preventative as I was diagnosed with a slightly enlarged prostate.
I found this forum as I was researching for any side effects reported. I am trying to identify if this is drug is causing me some issues.
I have been experiencing cold and numb feet and toes. Slight swelling from my knees to my ankles. Breathlessness and dizziness on slight exertion. Also loss of sexual drive, poor erections and shrinking of my penis. . I have had extensive ultra sound tests for PAD and Artirial Stonosis which came back negative which leads me to think that Dutasteride may be the issue. I am taking other medication, Statin and BP tablets and trying to determine what may be causing these symptons.

@graysilk I have been on it for 3+ years. The officially listed common side effects include
• Decreased libido (sex drive)
• Erectile dysfunction
• Reduced semen volume or ejaculation disorders
• Breast tenderness or enlargement (gynecomastia)
• Dizziness or lightheadedness

When my Urologiat prescribed it he also warned that should I have undetectable (at the time) or new prostate cancer that had been correlated with more aggressive forms of the cancer.
