C diff and diverticulitis

Posted by fpats17 @fpats17, Mar 20, 2019

hello all and I am glad I found this site. I was recently diagnosed with diverticulitis in August. Spent 3 days in the hospital, w/micro perforation put on liquid diet and IV antibiotics. Cleared up.. fast forward to January 2019 CT scan reveals I had MILD diverticulitis but no pain this time and only slight change in bowel habits. Back on low fiber and treated with usual cipro and flagyl. Now here we are March and follow up ct scan says diverticulitis again, But between January and March got C Diff along the way and then e coli while in Mexico. I demanded to be put on a different antibiotic so they gave me Amox/Clav but second culture still says I had c diff. Now I cannot tell if this is c diff or div. Doctor ordered me Deficid for the c diff since the amox/clav should handle the div. I am sure hoping that this is just the c diff and the deficid will take care of it! But at my wits end.Based on what i read and on this site and others I have spoken to, the diverticulitis seems to come back even after surgery. I am seeing a surgeon next week but am very reluctant to get a resection if it is not going really solve the problem. Also, has anyone else dealt with both c diff and div at the same time? This is completely nuts! any guidance or insight would be helpful since this is driving me insane. thank you all. fpats17

@lexiebea - WOW! I had no idea the FMT was available 9 years ago. Sounds like they were quite rare. Also sounds like you had a very rough case of Cdiff! It was certainly very kind of the Florida Doctor to send you everything necessary Next Day. I am dodging Antibiotics every way I can! I certainly don't want another Broad Spectrum Abx either! I am very glad you have done well for so long after the FMT! I am going to have to check into the Kefer . I read a bit on it so far today, and its a better Probiotic than yogurt I understand.

The Lifeway Kiefer taste the best . They have a few different flavors which made it tolerable but be aware it’s loaded with carbs. Since the CDIFF I now have to deal with digestive issues due to the damage that was done from this awful disease ,so I really watch what I eat.
I never even knew what CDIFF was until I nearly died. I had no warning . I collapsed on the floor waking to my dog trying to get someone’s attention in my house since it was in the middle of the night. By the time I got to the hospital my BP was 45/25 . After 5 long days they finally came up with CDIFF as my diagnosis. One of the worst and scariest times in my life. They sent me to the infectious disease center and that’s when I found out the toxin I had was antibiotic resistant . They had no info that they could give me. That’s when i realized I was on my own. After a month I found the Dr in FL it was very rare back then. Clindamycin and few others comes with a Black Box warning that no Dr or Pharmacist will warn you when prescribing it to you or maybe it was just my Dr 👩‍⚕️

Hi I've been struggling with lower abdominal pain on and off since April. I was told I have Diverticulitis but now I also have Cdiff. When will this pain and discomfort end and when am I no longer contagious from Cdiff?

Hi, @realgirl777, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Having on and off abdominal pain is rough. I experienced it for a totally different reason, taking semaglutide (Wegovy), which gave me the worst gut cramping I've experienced in my life. I found it distracting and hard to get through a day being productive.

I moved your post about having diverticulitis and C. diff here to this existing Connect discussion on the topic so you could chat with members such as @lexiebea @pixie1960 @researchmaven and others about how long you may be contagious with C. diff. and when the pain and discomfort is likely to end. Hoping they can provide some support.

realgirl777, when you were diagnosed with C. diff., what was the prescribed treatment? If there was treatment, has it been effective at all?

The treatment that finally got my episode of CDiff under control was Vancomycin. I think an 18 day period in which the dosage moved up and then tapered off . No one seems to tell sufferers about the great effect of diet has on C Diff. If you “feed” the bacteria , it is an uphill battle. It feeds on fructose and altered sugars . I have not eaten a peach in 12 years. All the fruit is full of it . Tomatoes , carrots . Any food that is high in fructose. ( sugars). That’s how I avoid attacks . I also will not take antibiotics unless the dosage is matched with vancomycin at the same dosage. I’ve not tried that yet . I am told it works . Blessings Crystalena

When I have an attack pain left quadrant abdomen under left flank at the back (the worst pain) even pain in my left hip I try to do bowel rest for 3 days trying to avoid antibiotics if that does not work I start an antibiotic treatment witj probiotics (to protect my intestinal flora from the antibiotics) but I need to continue to be on a liquid diet until I can slowly re-introduce sôlid food which can take many days. My problem is that I become so weak with this regimen that I also become confused. I cannot take productd like ensure because they contain lactose nor energy drinks because they contain sucrose,
Is there anyone in my situation & in the affirmative what do you do beside going to the ER & wait for hours to get an intravenous solute!
Would very much appreciate your input!

I am sorry for your distress. Concerning weakness, Fairlife Core Power shakes are lactose and sucrose free protein shakes. There is also OWYN plant based protein shakes. Wishing you feel better.
