Burning Mouth Syndrome: TREATMENT OPTIONS

Posted by allisonrosenberg @allisonrosenberg, 4 days ago

Mine is less a question than a suggestion. I have developed BMS secondary to #LongCovid, likely as a result EITHER of extreme, chronic dry mouth and/or nerve damage. I found one study online, with a n=1, reporting results of treating BMS in a woman aged 65 who had high levels of herpes simplex 1 virus DNA in her saliva. Treatment entailed 1 gr. valcyclovir 3x per day, for 10 days, followed by 1 gr. daily for a year. Patient's pain resolved on DAY 5 of treatment. I have followed exactly that regimen - I am on day 15 now -- and I find my symptoms vastly improved. Not entirely resolved. I do have herpes simplex 1, though rarely active, and -- as I say -- Long Covid. Coincidentally, I am 65 y.o.

I was dx with Burning Mouth Syndrome about 6 years ago (pre COVID). I was not prescribed anything. My doctor suggested I do a 30 day elimination diet (AIP) for a minimum of 30 days. I ended up doing it for 93 days before I started reintroducing eliminated foods. I found that pears and apples caused my BMS. Strawberries gave me horrible gastro issues along with other foods that I found caused issues. Interesting, as I have HSV-1 as well and break out with Shingles on a regular basis. The same year I was dx with BMS, I also had Ramsey Hunt Syndrome and developed a Mortens neuroma (all nerve related). I am 58.
