Bowel obstruction - No solution?

Posted by waiting84 @waiting84, Oct 26, 2023

Hi,

My wife was admitted to hospital for severe vomiting. The CT shows an obstruction in her duodenum. First we were told they can insert a stent to open up the obstruction. But after having a gastroscopy, now they say it's not possible. They say it's tightly closed. Putting a feeding tube is not feasible according to them.

Anyone has any experience or idea?

No experience with this and no medical training, but I read about different types of feeding tubes in a post here a few weeks ago, and was googling the same subject related to my father-in-law's cancer this week.

There are various types of feeding tubes, and one is called a J-tube because it goes into the jejunum, which comes after the duodenum. That, or a GJ tube (goes into stomach and into jejunum) might be something to ask about while you're seeking a second opinion elsewhere.

My duodenum was removed as part of the Whipple surgery, so a person can definitely live without one.

I'm sorry I don't know more about this, but that's the extent of my knowledge. I wish you both the best, and hope that little tidbit gives you something else to ask the doctors about. Keeping this thread near the top might elicit answers from the people whose posts I read a while back.

I've had two bowel obstructions in a span of less than a year (1998-99) following the initial removal of most of my large intestine which left me with about 15 inches.

Bowel obstructions mostly need surgery to rectify the reason for the bowel obstruction to occur. My obstructions were due to my new intestinal connection (anastomosis) scarring down so much to the point where I could no longer pass stool. Prior to surgery with my second obstruction I had two balloon dilation procedures (two weeks apart) to open the scarred down anastomosis but both of those procedures had failed to maintain an opening.

When I was hospitalized for each of my bowel obstructions I had a nasal gastric (NG) tube placed and IV and nothing my mouth so that my bowels could rest before each surgery.

I've never had a feeding tube but it seems that one can live without duodenum such as markymarkfl has done following his Whipple surgery.

Is the recommendation just for a feeding tube or are they and/or recommending surgery as well?

Things are not looking good. They say there is no way to feed her due to multiple instructions seen in the bowel. She was under TPN ( Total Perenteral Nutrition) but her condition didn't improve. Her blood counts are getting lower. Only care offered is palliative.

I'm so worried that she is going to starve to death. Anyone has any suggestions?

@waiting84, this must be so hard for you to watch. Is your wife still on TPN?
