BMT after Home Care

Hello- I'm starting pre testing for a BMT . My question is... when you came home from hospital after BMT how much help did you need? Dr's/team have told me I will probably feel nauseous & extremely tired for a while. . I do have family, friends & neighbors that are willing to help but I also don't want to be a burden. If I need to hire in home help a few weeks after I could do that. I've been reading a lot of the information on here about BMT- very nervous to be honest. Have a great Dr's/team just not looking forward to all the side effects and not feeling well! 🫤

Thanks for any information you may have to help! 😊

Hi @treehouse5437 There can be a number of issues regarding home care after a BMT. Each of us have our own experiences and will have varying degrees of ‘normalcy’ by the time we’re released to actually go home.
Not trying to be vague but usually by the time we go home around or just beyond the first 100 days post transplant, most of us are feeling well enough to manage…though fatigue can be a friend for several months.
By the end of the first 100 days usually there’s a steady uptake in stamina, nausea is gone. But it is still recommended to have someone to help out with driving to doctor’s appts, grocery shopping, cleaning, no changing cat litter, etc. There is an extensive recovery period post allogenic transplant.

I was excited to go home at the end of almost 4 months. But wow, getting into the car and driving first time was a shock. My legs were weak. So baby steps with all you do initially.

Are you having an allogeneic transplant using donor cells or an auto transplant using your own cells? Recovery from auto is generally much faster. Also, what is your protocol for transplant? Are you in-patient for a month and then released to go to your home or an off sight recovery center? Do you stay near your transplant center for 100 days?
Do you live alone?
