Blood work question: Abnormal lymphocyte and Large Platelets?

Posted by hlmcneely @hlmcneely, Oct 27, 2023

Hi, I have MDS and just got my latest blood test Tuesday. He was not as chatty as usual just said my platelets were the same as last time 75 however the report has 2 things I've never seen and wondered if anyone had an answer. I sent the doctor a note but no reply yet. One was Abnormal lymphocyte and the other was Large Platelets. Does anyone know what that means. T

Thank you, I follow the post every day.

hlmcneely,

I am glad you posted. I do not have MDS, but i was reminded from my last test results, that I cannot read into them. I really thought mine were good. I found the results on my hospital portal. I knew the doctor needed to read the results. I am not a doctor. He gave me the rest of the story i had not read and how the bone marrow provided results that need to be watched. Call the Dr. if you do not hear back. I looked up the abnormal lymphocyte. Happens if a virus is present. It could easily be no big deal. Or what i like to say is a manageable deal. I hope someone else posts that has this result.

@hlmcneely, have you met or heard from your hematologist in the meantime? What did you learn?

Colleen, No and I sent 2 messages thru the portal. So, this afternoon I sent a message to the specialist he sent me to after the bone biopsy when my platelets dropped to 64, I really like him however he is downtown Dallas and they were both seeing me each 3 months for blood work. I'll see if he replies and if not, I guess I will have to call. I had been considering switching to Baylor Scott and White who all my other doctors are through. Thank you for checking up on me.

I am not a doctor, but I am a MLS (medical lab scientist) who worked in a lab and performed CBCs. Abnormal lymphocytes and large platelets are both nonspecific findings. Almost everyone has large platelets. In fact at my last hospital, they made a rule that you couldn’t report large platelets unless they were larger than white blood cells. These findings can vary from person to person performing the test and the rules can vary from facility to facility. Another reason you might not have seen these reported before is that if your blood work falls within specific parameters, your CBC might not be looked at manually and only results from the analyzer would be reported. Abnormal lymphocytes and large platelets are things that a person can see manually with a microscope and report.

Your doctor needs to interpret these results with your diagnosis, previous history and other test results to determine what this means for you.

Laughing Jane. Thank you. That’s helpful. Yes never saw that on my cbc before and see how simple that was to explain. Thank you again.

I know how scary it is to wait for answers while you ruminate on test results. Sending big hugs to you on this journey!

Thank you, and I'm fine with the watch and wait, I just get frustrated with the process. I know its probably nothing, but if it means having an infection, is there some action to take. Have a blessed day a wonderful weekend and thank you for your answers.
