Blisters in mouth & lips - treatment suggestions?

Posted by pat80 @pat80, Dec 9 7:46pm

I am half way through radiation treatment and now have massive number of blisters in my mouth and lips. The blisters are likely down my esophagus also. I have lidocaine 2% plus a magic mouth wash and I am using Juven for Wound Healing. The lidocaine helps some but the mouth wash goes away quickly. It takes Juven approx. 1 month to start working. Does anyone have suggestions for treatment that worked for themz?

I used a simple salt and warm water rinse, occasionally adding a bit of baking soda. It seemed to help a lot, rinsing about four to five times per day.
Those mouth sores can be nasty some days. Ice chips or cubes help as well, as a temporary relief from pain.
Sorry you are experiencing this already. It can be torture some days.

Hi @pat80

Not sure what kind of cancer you had but I had 35 rounds (7 weeks) of Photon radiation for a total of 70Gy (Gray) and 3 rounds of Cisplatin chemo for tonsil cancer back in 2008 but no surgery and I did research then and found in an England Journal of Medicine that honey could help soothe the throat pain from the mouth sores/ulcers you will get. I did shots of real honey not the ones you find in your local grocery store which most all are synthetic and don’t have the same benefits. It definitely took some of the edge off for me. This honey is often quite thick so dilution with some warm water or tea would enable it to coat and soothe the throat.

I would only use MANUKA honey (it’s from New Zealand) which you can find on Amazon that scores at least UMF 15+ and MGO rating of 500+ are considered potent enough for medicinal use- UMF ranges from 10 to 25, the higher the rating, the more potent the benefits are, and of course, the more expensive, the honey. Also, the higher the rating the thinner the honey and better tasting- I use UMF 18+ and 700+ even now for many health benefits it offers and my most recent cancer treatments I received. In addition, I heard very good things about Red Light therapy, which uses infrared light from a wand in the throat has worked well for many. Someone also said MuGard is proven to reduce mouth and throat soreness associated with oral mucositis (OM).

Good luck on your journey. It will get better.

The blisters and mouth sores can be debilitating. How are you doing?

Thank you William for your suggestion . The Mays Cancer center in San Antonio where I’m an patient also recommends the salt & soda donation. However my sore and blisters always burn a lot with this.
Thank you roblem for your extensive reply. I’ve ordered the manuka honey and awaiting delivery—- holiday deliveries are taking a little longer.
Actually I’m pretty miserable but everyone keeps telling me I’ll get better. Compounding the mouth sores and blisters now is the extensive burning on my skin , throat and neck and skin. I’m using aquaphor on the skin but if anyone has other alternatives please give them
Incidentally I’m having radiation therapy for squamous cell carcinoma in the oral cavity.
I’m only having nutrition drinks and have lost 10 lbs. it is just so painful to swallow. The doctor has given me gabapentin for pain because I won’t take anything with a narcotic in it.
And I’ve been diagnosed also with early pneumonia so I’m in an antibiotic also. The Mays M d Anderson cancer center in San Antonio is wonderful in so many ways. However where there is a gap in services is providing alternatives to skin care, mouth sores and blisters. Thanks everyone for being supportive
