bleeding after radiation

Posted by shotgun @shotgun, Jun 14, 2023

Started radiation in 2021. During the treatments there was blood when I made a bowl movement. Sometimes very little blood other times a lot of blood. Bright red......Prior to radiation treatments I had no problems....During radiation treatments the colon is inflamed.
I still have small traces of blood when I go to the bathroom. I'm not sure if this will ever go away. Any suggestion, please let me know.
My PSA level as of today is .49.
Thanks.............Steve

Sorry to hear about that. I just finished radiation treatment last month and had no issues. Could it maybe be hemmeroids?

I’ve had a similar issue off and on since radiation treatment almost two years ago. It seems to get worse after vigorous exercise or eating too much roughage (like raw vegetables) or fried food. A GI doctor confirmed it is not hemorrhoids and prescribed Mesalamine suppositories to soothe that area Those seem to be working. And I watch what I eat.

I’m curious as to whether you had SpaceOAR inserted?

Have an exam by a Gastroenterologist, which might involve an endoscopy.
Cannot guess what's in the cave without taking a flashlight and checking it out.

Interesting there are two threads today on the same subject. Just yesterday I was talking to my primary doctor about having blood and very local sharp pain when I go. I completed radiation about 16 months ago. I had the SpaceOAR and eat a high fiber diet. My primary feels it is radiation related but that's only a guess so today I scheduled my ever so pleasant colonoscopy and we'll see what happens.

About 12 months after completing 40 sessions of radiation therapy, I experienced internal bleeding due to scarring of the bladder and rectum. I had some blood in the urine, as well as with bowel movements. My urologist approved me for oxygen therapy in a local hospital wound center where they had a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. You spend an hour lying down in a tube where they pump in pure oxygen, and you watch tv above the chamber. After 40 sessions my bleeding was cured.

A colonoscopy was done, with neither any polyps nor hemorrhoids. It is proctitis post-radiation. I wonder if any diet might help.

I like the hyperbaric oxygen therapy option. I heard it works, although no full evidence of its success. I will ask my urologist for it.

I just finished the 5 session proton radiation at Mayo Phoenix two months ago, I had the SpaceOar Gel. I had three days of a pinkish discharge before my bowel movements a week after the radiation was complete sort of like a wet fart. Nothing since then.
