Big toe bending forward at middle joint very painful

Posted by charcat @charcat, May 15 7:58am

Have very bad neuropathy, no sleep, cramps and pain most of night. The last month my big toe on either foot has decided to bend forward at middle joint and stay there. Very painful stays until it finally relaxes and goes back to normal. Afraid to move my legs and feet because of the cramping in feet and legs now this with the big toe.

Has your doctor examined it? Have you ever had gout?

@charcat, I have hammertoes also on both feet but just have numbness and no pain. Mine never return to the flat, normal position. There are some members who have posted experience with hammertoes and neuropathy. Here's a search link that lists a few discussions and comments - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/discussions/?search=hammertoes.

I've thought about surgery but didn't follow through. Have you seen a doctor or podiatrist to see if they have some treatment suggestions?

Thank you for your reply, but I don’t have hammer toes my toes are just fine. All of a sudden my toe bends the whole foot tightens up and I have to wait in pain till it releases and goes back to normal. Have not seen doctor yet because I am getting fed up that they really don’t know what to do for neuropathy.

Do you think it could be toe cramps?

I have great sympathy for you, sometimes I can't move my foot or toes in the night or the whole foot has cramps like that. All I found to help is a walk around the house before bed. Best to you.

I really took care yesterday icing my foot and toe’s. did foot, toe and leg exercises, drank a few ounces of tonic water because of the quinine and my pure organic coconut water because of the potassium and magnesium and I slept for the first time in a week.

Have you seen an orthopedic foot specialist/podiatrist?

Have you had X-rays and MRI of your foot? Have you ever had your lumbar spine checked for compression that may contribute to your leg/foot symptoms?

Did your neurologist diagnose your neuropathy with a EMG/nerve conduction study?

How are you currently being treated for pain and neuropathy?

Hi, have appt. With foot doctor.
Have not had MRI of foot
Do have compression on L4 L5 does not bother me.
Have Sciatic nerve problems. Have many exercises to keep under control
Many years ago had EMG nerve study, when my neuropathy wasn’t that bad.
Currently do not have a neurologist. All they wanted to do was put me on Gabapentin was on for about 4yrs.
Just recently weaned myself off , do not take anymore.
I am currently just on OTC meds that I do a lot of research on. Walking and leg and foot exercises.
