BHRT plus bone supplements with algae derived calcium plus strontium
I am 82. Three endocrinologists have recommended Evenity to me. I am concerned with black box warning. And I don't like that after 1 year one must go on a different bone med--most of which also have scary side effects and produce some kind of frankenbone.
Years of blood thinners and thyroid meds have apparently eaten my bones despite regular weight lifting and trying to stat fit. I have lost several inches and have T8 and T9 vertebra fractures. Changed from Warfarin to Eloquis blood thinner (hopefully for the better).
In checking around internet, I notice the most satisfied older women dealing with osteoporosis seem to be doing well on BHRT along with Algae based calcium/mineral supplements and strontium. I recently started using compounded BHRT cream based on saliva test along with these bone supplements plus strontium. Anyone have thoughts or experience based on this approach (along with high protein diet and exercise of course).

I am 76 and went on estradiol patch and progesterone in May for exactly the reasons you stated. I also take fortebone in smoothies a few times a week, and recently started strontium. I cannot get a dexa test until June of 2026 to know for sure, but have had 3 CTx tests and the third one showed a drop of 40%. which indicates resorption. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is working. Good Luck with your medical journey. Keep us posted.

I am in my early 70s, and as you know , our generation wasn't able to get on HRT due to the misinterpreted HRT study. I'm hoping to find a dr who will prescribe HRT for bone loss My University of WA geriatric dr focusing on bone loss refused me although my lipids are great, no high blood pressure and insisted I take Evenity and then Prolia, but I've refused. Might I ask as to whether you are also on testosterone and progesterone and if the estradiol is bioidentical? Thanks!

2 ReactionsI strongly recommend you check out Inspire.com and under the Osteoporosis category find Strontium Citrate success stories--they are numerous. Many of these gals have been taking this mineral for years and are no longer in osteopenia or osteoporosis categories. And note the age of these women--you'll be encouraged!

2 Reactions@susiekay613 I have been on pellets natural hormones since my mid 50's I had a hysterectomy so take estrogen 6mg and testosterone 35mg which is the lowest amount which lasts me about 3-4 months along with Calcium plus vit D and other vitamins. I was given bone density drugs several years ago that did not increase my bone density at all. But HRT along with weight bearing exercise 3x's a week as helped. I was diagnosed with DCIS stage zero and had genetic testing with no breast cancer in my family. I had a partial lumpectomy and they found no traces of cancer and all margins were clear just atypical cells and I was told to get off of hormones but got back on them about 8 months after the lumpectomy. The doctors got out everything in the biopsies prior to the surgery. So they really just did a clean up and checked the margins which were all clear. I felt my quality of life was better with Natural hormone replacement and my bones were alot happier and so was I. I think what we have been told about HRT is not always good for women. WE all have to make our own choices based on the individual and how you feel. Good luck to you and everyone on this site.

3 Reactions@pduff s. So appreciate your response & for describing what works for you. You have certainly been through a lot! I'm actively seeking a dr, likely a gynecologist to prescribe BHRT. Thanks much!
Hi Sue, Thanks for your reply. If you can't find a a gynecologist I would suggest gong to a clinic that specializes in natural hormone replacement there are several where I live in AZ . I use Tutera which was started by Dr. Tutera who brought HRT to the US from Europe many, many years ago and trained other doctors. There is also Love Joy clinic in my state most are run by RN"s and Physician Assistants who have been trained in the practice. so, please don't give up just Google natural hormone clinics in your state and research them. I counsel women who are going through the change no matter what stage in their like and try to find some solutions for them based on research and their individual circumstances as everyone is different. You can reach out to me here or email me pduffpat@hotmail.com if you have any questions. I work with clients who are referred to me by other clients so by word of mouth only. Keep searching for answers and don't give up ever! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
@susiekay613 I am on estradiol and progesterone
@susiekay613
I got a list of several nurse practitioners who can prescribe BHRT from a compounding pharmacy. The one I chose took my medical history and had me do the saliva test. The test showed I was pretty low in estrogen, progesterone and testosterone and very high in cortisol. The BHRT cream was prepared by the compounding pharmacy. I apply the cream from a container that clicks out the specified amount and rub it into the skin on my inner forearms or inner thighs.

Thank you for mentioning your CTx tests--at least that is one way positive things could well be happening.
I am going to start BHRT soon with a knowledgeable clinic. I had been taking Algae Cal and decided to add Strontium in the mean time. I seem to have broken out in hives after taking the strontium. I did find one case study of exactly the same reaction. Sadly, the woman who had the same reaction as I did with the hives, continued to take it for 6 weeks. I stopped after the first week. Common denominator, we both are on Levothyroxine. Has any one else had this reaction?
